Time for your daily David de Gea update. Although the soap opera is really over now. The “will he stay at Manchester United, or move to Real Madrid” narrative is settled. At least until next summer. Still, one reporter today asked United Manager Louis van Gaal about De Gea’s everyday attitude.
Van Gaal said the Spanish goalkeeper’s attitude in training has been excellent this preseason.
“I have said that already, so when you ask me every press conference to the attitude of de Gea, I think it’s stupid,” the United boss said. “There’s so much in the papers that is not true. … Maybe you’re right, but I can’t tell that in this moment.”
The De Gea question then opened the floodgates (against the will of the United press officer) to more queries about Robert Lewandowski, Edinson Cavani and transfer business in general. It led to some classic and amusing sparring.
“He’s writing always…rubbish,” Van Gaal said while pointing to a media member in the room.
“And then it is true, in the media it’s true. No, it’s not true,” he continued as ripped on tabloid journalism.
“You are asking every time the same questions, I cannot answer them.”
As the session concluded he raised a glass, said “cheers” and told someone in the room that he “invents stories.”
You should definitely watch the Van Gaal presser below. It’s very amusing to watch the Dutchman banter and take batting practice on a few of the reporters.
