David de Gea is reportedly poised to sign a new deal that will keep him at Manchester United until 2018. The deal is rumored to in the neighborhood of £90k a week. The Daily Mirror seems to have reported this first, but numerous outlets are picking up this story on the Spanish goalkeeper.
David de Gea is “very happy” with his form this season and has his sights set on breaking Alex Stepney’s record number of appearances for the club.
David de Gea moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid on a five-year deal in the summer of 2011 as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar. The £18.9million signing struggled to live up to his price tag in his early days in England. He was labelled not commanding or strong enough and failed to cement a first-team place in his first 18 months as a United player.
However, his performances in 2012-13 earned him a place in the Premier League team of the year and he has started all but one game this season under new Red Devils boss David Moyes. David de Gea made his United debut in July 2011 in an international friendly in Chicago, IL. USA. Their opponents, the Chicago Fire of the MLS got the first glimpse of this -at that time- very controversial signing at Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears.
Currently, David de Gea has two years left on his United deal. At the time of his signing, the concern for every Manchester United supporter was that de Gea will crack under the pressure much like previous United goalkeepers have since the retirement of Peter Schmeichel and the emergence of van der Sar such as recent pretenders to the throne like Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak to cringe worthy clowns like Mark Bosnich and Massimo Taibi.
I’d say that’s been alleviated now, as the Glazer family and Moyes seem to be willing to invest so much more money in him.
