Time for your daily David de Gea update. It’s a a never ending soap opera exactly like Arturo Vidal was last summer. Will he stay at Manchester United, or move to Real Madrid? Nothing is official yet of course, but here’s the latest headlines on the situation.
David De Gea will not play tomorrow in the season opener versus Tottenham Hotspur. Manager Louis van Gaal was asked if he is concerned about his #1 being distracted tomorrow during the match because of his very uncertain future at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal said: “De Gea will not play. I don’t have any concerns. He won’t start the game. I think a human being is more than only a player. He cannot manage it. You have to wait and see who will play.”
That means the call will most likely go to the recent addition, Sergio Romero. Although it would be highly unlikely, don’t rule out the youngster Sam Johnstone either. So that answers the short term De Gea question, what about the long term question? Van Gaal admits the situation is out of his control now. The Dutchman no longer has any influence in the decision making process here.
“I don’t know the solution with De Gea, that is the process. Still you repeat the question. I cannot lead this process, I can only watch and observe and that is what I’m doing. I’m not participating in it,” Van Gaal said.
“When it is not like that I accept it because I know when I became manager of Manchester United, every transfer period is a process. I’m fighting against the transfer period.”
“I know what is the process like and what it means for clubs and managers. It is not easy for De Gea to manage his situation now.”
