AS Roma have accepted Liverpool FC’s £66.8 million ($84 million) bid for goalkeeper Alisson Becker, and that bid amount will make him the most expensive goalie in world history. The current, and soon to be broken world record is the 53 million euros (£47.27m, $61.67m) paid by Juventus to Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.
The Premier League record, by the way, was broken just last year when Manchester City paid 40 million Euro to Benfica for Ederson. The Alisson deal is not finalized yet, as it is subject to personal terms and completion of a medical with the Anfield club.
The BBC reports: “The Premier League club are now expected to hold talks with the Brazil international.”
Real Madrid and Chelsea have also reportedly targeted Alisson this summer, and their interest likely helped to drive the price up. Anfield have been in dire need for an upgrade at shot stopper ever since incumbent #1 Loris Karius had the worst game of his life in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.
Although Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has publicly backed Karius, the embattled keeper continues making gaffes this preseason, with an another glaring error coming against Tranmere Rovers.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as translated by FanSided’s Rush the Kop, a major sticking point in this deal was Natalie Loewe, the wife of Alisson Becker.
She was hesitant to leave glitz and glamor of Rome for life in Merseyside; especially with Madrid and London calling. Alisson Becker started all five games for Brazil in the World Cup, registering three clean sheets during the tournament in Russia.
