In the final days of the summer transfer window, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho warned us that his team would be in for a tough campaign if not additional signings were made. That’s exactly what happened as United ended up signing no one else after July 3.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Mourinho gave a very brief analysis of the clubs that finished in the top six last season, and explained how some of them have strengthened over the summer. He also, once again, called out the media for their portrayal of his team finished in 2017-18.
He also had high praise for Tottenham’s lifeless summer transfer window, which has been widely criticized (and deservedly so).
“Last season, we put ourselves in a difficult position, because to do better we can only finish first,” said Mourinho.
“When I read sometimes and watch sometimes, it looks like we finished sixth or seventh and everybody did better than us. We finished second.
“Liverpool are trying to win the title with their amazing investment. Chelsea have a fantastic squad, Manchester City have a fantastic squad too, Tottenham made an incredible investment by keeping their players, that’s the best investment you can make.
“They could be spending £200m but if they lose Harry Kane or Christian Eriksen…the biggest investment was keeping all their best players.”
“Arsenal will be better even though they lost their first match. I think it’s going to be a very hard season.”
It’s going to be difficult for everybody in the big six to catch Manchester City this season, simply because there was such a wide gap last term. United were runners-up and they were a whopping 19 points off the pace.
