Alvaro Morata was a top trending term on Twitter today as the Chelsea striker finally scored again. The summer transfer window acquisition from Real Madrid scored his first goal in 2018 during the Blues’ 2-1 extra time win over Leicester City in the FA Cup quarterfinals today.
Morata returned to the starting XI for the first time in four matches, and obviously rewarded manager Antonio Conte for selecting him. The Italian said afterward that he was impressed by his young forward’s character.
“For Alvaro, it was important to score but I am pleased for his performance,” Conte told the media after the game. “He showed great character and to be strong. I think his goal will be very important for the future.”
Alvaro Morata had last previously scored against Brighton & Hove Albion, back in December. Across all competitions, his drought had reached 13 games. He has now reached double figure scoring for Chelsea this term. Perhaps he will be a factor for the Blues as they now continue their quest for the FA Cup title; their only chance for a trophy this season. Shortly after the victory today, Chelsea learned that their semifinal opponent will be Southampton.
