The winter silly season is in full swing, as the January transfer window is open for business. Though we must want you, the winter window possesses just a fraction of the fun, relevance and intrigue that the summer edition contains.
That’s said, there’s plenty of talk today about Arsenal FC’s first signing of the period, young left back Cohen Bramall.
The 20-year-old comes from Hendesford Town, and he’ll join up with the Arsenal U-23s:
The announcement on the club site reads: “The 20-year-old, who impressed on a recent trial, will join up with Steve Gatting and our under-23s squad. Cohen has come through non-league football and played with Market Drayton last season.”
Although this is a very obscure player, and not one who will contribute right away, there is still a very compelling story line related to this signing. For that we now turn it over to ESPN FC:
Details of his contract were not disclosed, but the deal is reportedly worth about £40,000.
It’s a remarkable reversal of fortune for Bramall, who said he was laid off from his job the day before Arsenal first contacted him about coming in for a trial.
“I can’t believe that I’m here already. It’s mental,” Bramall said in the video of Arsenal’s official club site.
“I played a game at Birmingham City on a Monday. Then on the Tuesday, I was made redundant from Bentley Motors and on the Wednesday, Arsenal came in. I was gobsmacked and took the chance with both hands. I drove down on the Wednesday and trained with the first team on Thursday and Friday. Then they offered me a deal.”
Wow! Like Frank Sinatra famously sang: “that’s life. That’s what they say. You’re riding high in April, shot down in May.”
