Arsenal Football Club unveiled their new manager, Unai Emery, at a press conference today which saw the Basque Country native outline his vision for the north London club.
Emery, who just led Paris Saint-Germain to a domestic treble, faces a major rebuilding project at the Emirates this summer. The Gunners, traditionally among the Premier League title contenders, failed to even finish in the top four during the past two seasons. The club went into a sharp decline during the final years of the Arsene Wenger era, and now Emery will be tasked in restoring former glory.
Asked about his goals and objectives this upcoming season, Emery stressed player development, and declared his ambitions to make the Gunners among the best teams in Europe.
“But how do you develop? I think that’s about battling for every title. That’s something that is in Arsenal’s history and it’s in my history as well,” he said.
“And I want that to continue. Our objective is to win titles and to be among the best teams in Europe. I also want to make the fans proud of the team. I know they already are, but I want them to continue to be.”
Unai Emery also said that his side will continue playing the same brand of attacking football that supporters have come to know under Wenger.
“My ideal is to be the protagonist in all the match. We will play against all teams with this personality. I think the history here is one thing- they love playing with possession of the ball,” he continued.
“I like this personality,” he added.
“I like being the protagonist with the ball. And when you don’t have possession of the ball, I want a very squad that is very, very intensive with the pressure. It’s very important for me to be protagonist with the ball and pressing when you don’t have the ball.”
