Notre Dame Football, Chase Claypool Get National Pub from Adnan Virk

This past weekend, Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly said that his junior tailback Josh Adams just isn’t really getting a lot of national media love right now. Adams leads the Fighting Irish, who rank sixth nationally as a team in yards rushing per game, with 658 yards (131.6 per contest) on the ground this season.

He’s averaging 9.01 yards per carry, and ranks fourth nationally in total rushing yards.

“He’s a stud,” said Kelly. “I mean, look, (Saquon) Barkley is a great player at Penn State, but you know, Josh has got to start to get some kind of national recognition for the kind of season that he’s having.”

For the record, Adams has 84 more yards rushing than Barkley thus far this season, and on 13 less carries.

Regarding national recognition on the collegiate gridiron, College Football Final Studio Host Adnan Virk was gracious enough to join us on The TSB Show, and we covered Notre Dame football in detail.

You can hear the audio via Sound Cloud below; ND specific talk starts around the 11 mark:

The Notre Dame running game is really good, not just Adams, but Brandon Wimbush,” said Virk.

“That’s my concern is how well can Wimbush throw the ball but I think he’s improved as a passer as the year has gone on, but he can run a ton too.”

Virk is hearing three names right now in the Heisman trophy race- Saquon Barkley, Stanford running back Bryce Love and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield; but no Adams.

“Brian Kelly I think will be more frustrated, unless Josh Adams gets more love because he’s not getting it right now,” Virk said.

Assessing how the 2017 Notre Dame football season could play out, Virk marveled at the strength of the team’s schedule, and forecasted how they could finish. Starting with last week against the RedHawks, the Fighting Irish will play a bowl team from last season every week from here on out. Still remaining on the schedule is #14 USC, #24 NC State and #13 Miami; while Navy and Stanford are receiving votes in the polls.

“A ten win season would be shocking with that schedule, a nine win team, I agree with you, I think they would be pleased, and an eight win season might be a little bit of a disappointment.”

“They schedule strongly I credit the administration. They’re never looking for cupcakes, they’re going to get every team’s best too, because you’re playing Notre Dame, you’re playing on NBC or in a national market and you’d have to be crazy to think that players aren’t aware of that.”

Finally, Notre Dame sophomore wide receiver Chase Claypool, who hails from Abbotsford, British Columbia, made the weekly College Football Final homage to Canadians excelling on the college gridiron. Claypool caught a 7 yard TD pass from Wimbush against Miami of Ohio last week.

Both Virk and Final studio analyst Jesse Palmer are Canadian, so they were very excited to see Claypool score.

“We were giving so much love to Nathan Rourke, the quarterback from Ohio because he’s the one Canadian that Jesse and I were both acutely aware of, but Tim Murray a buddy of mine in D.C. is a huge Notre Dame fan and he had texted me and said keep an eye on Claypool this kid’s Canadian too,” Virk said.

“So as soon as he got the touchdown we’re like thank goodness we got somebody else we can profile on our Canada segment on College Football Final, so trust me nobody is a bigger fan of C.C.”
