College Hoops 101

By: David Kay

Six days until Selection Sunday.  Beginning tomorrow, non-stop college basketball all over the television.  The Sports Bank is THE place to go for everything you need to know about the conference tourneys, NCAA Tournament, and hell, even the NIT.

I will be live blogging this week during the Big East Tournament.  TSB founder Paul M. Banks will be covering the Big Ten Tournament this weekend in Indianapolis, the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Milwaukee, the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in St. Louis, and the Final Four in Indianapolis.  Yes, Banks will be doing more traveling than Willy Loman during the next month.

Onto College Hoops 101… In this week’s edition conference tournament predictions, plus I am now just ten games away from hitting the 274-game watched mark.

Fast Forward
-Look for in-depth previews and predictions of the Big East and Big Ten Tournaments later this week on The Sports Bank.  Here are my predictions for the other major conference tournaments:

A10: #2 Xavier over #1 Temple
Sleeper: #7 Dayton- Played themselves out of the tourney by losing four of their last five and is in desperation mode which is dangerous in March.

ACC: #1 Duke over #2 Maryland
Sleeper: #7 Georgia Tech- The Jackets lost five of seven down the stretch, but have the talent to pull off a few upsets.

Big 12: #1 Kansas over #3 Baylor
Sleeper: #7 Oklahoma State- Anytime you have a scorer like James Anderson who can go off for 30 a night, you can make some serious noise.

CUSA: #2 Memphis over #5 Tulsa
Sleeper: #5 Tulsa- Home court advantage throughout the tourney is a huge advantage.

MWC: #2 BYU over #1 New Mexico
Sleeper: #3 UNLV- Tourney is in Sin City.

Pac-10: #3 Washington over #1 Cal
Sleeper: #4 Arizona- Their younger players are growing up quickly.  If they can stay out of foul trouble and Nic Wise plays like a senior, they can make a run.

SEC: #E1 Kentucky over #E2 Vanderbilt
Sleeper: Mississippi State- The Bulldogs won four games in four days to win the tourney last year and will need a similar run to be dancing this year after playing their way out by losing their final two regular season games.

-Someday I will vote in the AP poll.  For now, here’s my top 10…
1. Kansas, 27-2 (Last Week Ranking: 2)
2. Kentucky, 27-2 (LWR: 3)
3. Syracuse, 26-2 (LWR: 1)
4. Duke, 26-5 (LWR: 4)
5. Purdue, 24-4 (LWR: 6)
6. Ohio State, 23-7 (LWR: 8 )
7. New Mexico, 27-3 (LWR: 9)
8. West Virginia, 24-6 (LWR: 10)
9. Kansas State, 24-6 (LWR: 5)
10. Villanova, 24-6 (LWR: 7)

The Drive
Games watched through 3/7: 265
Teams I have seen play this season: 118
Games watched this past week (home teams in CAPS): 17

#6 KANSAS STATE 63, Missouri 53
KSU a possible #1 seed?  Frank Martin National Coach of the Year?  Both are very possible.

Arizona 71, STANFORD 69

‘Zona freshman Lamont “Mo Mo” Jones banks in a jumper at the buzzer.  It’s the third time this season a Wildcat point guard has won a game at the buzzer.

#25 TEXAS 87, Oklahoma 76

Not gonna lie, it gets a little dusty wherever I am when I see seniors get taken out to a standing ovation on their senior night.

MARQUETTE 69, Louisville 48
I couldn’t be more impressed by a Marquette win than this one.  Seriously blown away by their performance.  TOURNEY BOUND BABY!  (By the way, you NEED to click on the video below.)

NOTRE DAME 58, UConn 50
The Irish may have clinched a tourney birth while the situation gets a little stickier for the Huskies.

#23 MARYLAND 79, #4 Duke 72

I disagree with the Terps fans storming the court, but that’s nothing new for me this season.  That 4th one-seed in the NCAA Tournament is up for grabs for sure now.

Winthrop 61, Radford 46
I was scouting Radford center Art Parakhouski who is a potential second round pick and let’s just say I was not impressed at all.

Mo-Mo Jones is going to be Nic Wise Junior.  Kyle Fogg hit seven three’s.  UCLA is still bad.

MURRAY STATE 55, Eastern Illinois 51
Murray State is now 29-4 on the year and has six players that average between 9.5-10.8 points per game.  If you’re looking for a sleeper in your brackets though, I am not sure they are the ones.

#10 West Virginia 69, #9 VILLANOVA 68 OT

I honestly don’t know what to make of either of these teams heading into tourney play.

Notre Dame 63, MARQUETTE 60 OT

All that good karma had to eventually backfire for Marquette.  That is fine; better now that in the tourney.

LOUISVILLE 78, #1 Syracuse 68

The Cards close out Freedom Hall in style.  I guess Pitino owns Boeheim?  By the way, Kyle Kuric… where did that come from?

#22 BAYLOR 92, #25 Texas 77

Quincy Acy had 12 field goals… 10 of them were dunks.

MURRAY STATE 62, Morehead State 51
I mean, I couldn’t miss the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title game, right?

#3 KENTUCKY 74, Florida 66

The ‘Cats were my pre-season prediction to win it all but am I beginning to sour a bit on their chances.

#17 Wisconsin 72, ILLINOIS 57
The Badgers look good right now.  Like, real good.  Don’t get used to me saying that.

Northern Iowa 67, Wichita State 52
My condolences to the #1 fan of my Bracketology and Wichita State enthusiast, Brian as they miss out on the tourney and are likely headed to the NIT.
