College Hoops 101

College Hoops 101 is a weekly article centering around all things college basketball.  David Kay looks back at the previous week, glances forward to what is ahead in the up-coming days, and keeps track of how many games I have watched this season in hopes of topping my mark from a year ago (274.)

In this week’s edition I top the 200 games watched mark, people pre-maturely jump on the Illinois bandwagon, and Luke Harangody makes me very, VERY happy.

Rewind

-Man, are people hopping on the Illinois bandwagon.  TSB founder Paul M. Banks received a message on a youtube interview he did with Demetri McCamey stating that “Baby Ben” will “go down as one of the best Illini ever.”  Really?  REALLY????  Then Brent Musberger during the MSU/Purdue game says that Bruce Weber should be in the conversations for Coach of the Year.  Really?  REALLY????  Let’s calm down for a second please.  This is the same team that lost to Bradley, Utah, and Georgia earlier this season.  Yes, they are playing great right now (note: I wrote this portion prior to them getting stomped at home by Ohio State on Sunday), but a two-week stretch does not warrant either of those comments.  Click here to read more on the Illini’s big road win at Wisconsin.

-Either this is new or I just don’t remember it, but at Vanderbilt, the team benches are located at opposite ends of the baseline instead of the normal spot along the sidelines.  This is dumb; not as dumb as thinking Bruce Weber should be in Coach of the Year discussions, but still dumb.  It has to especially difficult for coaches trying to communicate with their team when they are on the other end offensively.

Click here to read a detailed breakdown of the Bruce Weber for Coach of the Year argument, and why it fails so massively.

-Barring a massive turnaround or running the table in their conference tournaments, North Carolina, UConn, and UCLA will all miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1966.  Add in Arizona who will likely have their streak of 25-straight trips to the tourney come to an end, and the dance will be minus four of the best programs in the country.

-Someday I will vote in the AP poll.  For now, here’s my top 10…
1. Kansas, 24-1 (Last Week Ranking: 1)
2. Kentucky, 24-1 (LWR: 3)
3. Villanova, 22-2 (LWR: 4)
4. Syracuse, 24-2 (LWR: 2)
5. Purdue, 21-3 (LWR: 5)
6. Duke, 21-4 (LWR: 7)
7. Ohio State, 18-6 (LWR: 9)
8. Kansas State, 20-4 (LWR: NR)
9. Gonzaga, 21-4 (LWR: NR)
10. West Virginia, 19-5 (LWR: 6)

Fast Forward
Purdue at Ohio State (Wed. 5:30, BTN)
A battle of two of the three teams tied atop the Big Ten standings.  Purdue has won seven straight since dropping three in a row mid-January while the Buckeyes have rattled off nine consecutive conference wins.

Louisiana Tech at Utah State (Wed 10:05, ESPN2)

The winner of this game has the leg up in representing the WAC in the NCAA Tournament.  By the way, I am the only person outside of Louisiana and Utah who will be watching this game.

Syracuse at Georgetown (Thurs 6:00, ESPN)
Both teams will be looking to bounce back after baffling losses (‘Cuse at home to Louisville, G-Town at Rutgers.)

Bracket Buster Weekend
Friday and Saturday is Bracket Buster weekend on the ESPN Family of Networks.  If you want to do some scouting on potential Cinderella’s for your bracket picks, tune in as some of the top mid-majors will be going head-to-head.

The Drive
Games watched through 2/14: 212
Teams I have seen play this season: 114
Games watched this past week (home teams in CAPS): 18

OKLAHOMA 80, #10 Texas 71
Had to catch up on this game from last weekend.  Maybe if Texas hits better than 10-27 from the free throw line they win this game?

#5 Villanova 82, #4 WEST VIRGINIA 75

So let me get this straight; ‘Nova who has one less loss than West Virginia and is coming off a loss at a top-ten team falls one spot below the Mountaineers in the newest coach’s poll?  That makes zero sense.  At least it will change after this game.

#1 Kansas 80, #14 TEXAS 68

This Longhorn team is a mess right now.  Since earning the #1 ranking a few weeks ago, Texas has lost five of their last seven.  Offensively, they get into spurts where they have zero rhythm or flow and settle for awful shots.  And seriously, can someone please tell Brent Musberger to stop calling Xaiver Henry, “X”????

#24 VADNERBILT 90, #12 Tennessee 71

Former Vandy star Jay Cutler was in the crowd for this game.  A loose ball rolled to his seat in the crowd and he inexplicably threw it to a Tennessee player rather than a Vanderbilt player and then sulked about it.  Okay, I made that last part up.

Illinois 63, #13 WISCONSIN 56

It was the Demetri McCamey/Mike Tisdale show for the Illini who combined for 46 points.   Suddenly the Illini are on a roll and very much alive in the conference race after back-to-back big wins.

#6 Purdue 76, #10 MICHIGAN STATE 64
Steve Lavin kept saying this was a “crucible stretch” for Michigan State.  I am not sure if he meant to say crucial or critical, but either way, Sparty has lost three straight during this “crucible stretch.”

#2 KENTUCKY 66, Alabama 55
The other Wildcat freshman phenom, DeMarcus Cousins posted his seventh straight double-double.  If you count number of times he has shown horrible body language, that is seven straight triple-doubles.

#3 SYRACUSE 72, UConn 67
Andy Rautins is the ‘Cuse’s MVP this season and one of my top five favorite players.  He is the most crucial piece to the Orange’s success.

#7 Duke 64, NORTH CAROLINA 54

Dickie V. needs a new schtick and to lay off the spray tanning.  He is scary in HD.  UNC’s bubble officially burst in this one.

SETON HALL 90, Notre Dame 87

LUKE HARANGODY GOT HURT!  MY VOODOO DOLL WORKS!  DOWN WITH THE LEPRECHAUN FU#$ER!!!!

ARIZONA 70, Oregon 57

‘Zona returns home and snaps a two-game skid only to lose two nights later to Oregon State?  I give up on trying to figure out the Pac-10.

#11 GONZAGA 80, St. Mary’s 61

Zags prove they are the best in the WCC by winning this first place battle.  I am starting to like Matt Bouldin more and more as an NBA prospect.

#23 PITT 98, #4 West Virginia 95 3 OT

Up 7 with 49.5 seconds left and shooting two free throws and the Mountaineers let this one slip away.  I feel like no team has had more come from behind wins yet big letdown losses this season than Bob Huggins bunch.  I was kind of hoping for six overtimes.

#5 VILLANOVA 91, Providence 82
If I had to make an “All-Smartest Player Team,” Scottie Reynolds would be battling Matt Bouldin and Jon Scheyer for captain of that squad.

#13 WISCONSIN 83, Indiana 55

Sitting baseline at this game, it seemed the Hoosiers quit on Tom Crean.  For the record, the media waited for Crean for at least an hour after the game.  I don’t know how long exactly it was because I got tired of waiting and just left.

#1 KANSAS 73, Iowa State 59

Jayhawks are good.  Fact.  I am glad Brent Musberger wasn’t doing this game so I didn’t have to hear him call Xavier Henry “X” all game.  Seriously needs to stop.

MARQUETTE 63, South Florida 52
Five straight wins has the Golden Eagles firmly off the bubble and in the NCAA Tournament picture.  They have already exceeded my expectations.

#2 KENTUCKY 73, #12 Tennessee 62
I said it above and I’ll say it again; DeMarcus Cousins is a beast and probably the best big man in college hoops.  But he has Rasheed Wallace tendencies in letting his frustrations get the best of him.

  1. “Crucible stretch?!!!” ha ha ha that was so awesome when we heard my BFF Lav say that on tv. I need to send him a Yahoo chat asking why an Arthur Miller play set during 17th century New England centering around witch hysteria, with the intention of serving as a cautionary tale allegory about McCarthyism during the Communist hysteria has to do with the 2010 Big 10 race!

I’m sure the parable of his message is obvious- I just don’t see it yet

  2. Peter Christian says

I’ll give you that the Pac-10 is a mess but what about the Big East? Nearly every team in the conference has a loss on their record that makes people stop and go, “Wait, what?”

  3. Fact. But the Pac-10 is a complete mess… I have no idea what’s going to happen in that conference… at least a few Big East teams have separated themselves from the pack unlike out west…

  4. The Pac 10 is a clusterfuck. you can say literally say wihtout hyperbole that the WCC is a stronger conference this season

  5. Oh and I hate being right, but I did say a couple days after the Wisconsin win to numerous people in illination to “settle down Beavis” they haven’t won anything yet. I didn’t think they would go out and have their worst home loss since 196 on Sunday, but I did know that not all is quite well yet

  6. Did you say Crean made the media wait an hour?? WHAT A DOUCHE…and I thought that shit he pulled at Northwestern was bad, making all of us wait while we were dying to leave for the Super Bowl. a SB featuring a fucking team in the primary media market that covers him. He needs to be in someone’s douchebracket this March
