College Hoops 101

Year two of College Hoops 101 is in full effect.  One week of the season is down and I opened up with a solid performance of college hoops viewing.  I still have not settled on a goal for the number of games I am going to watch this year or some sort of challenge for this season.  It has been suggested that I try to watch all 330 Division One teams, but I am vetoing that idea because I don’t want to have to suffer through watching crappy teams.  That is not why I watch as much college basketball as I do.  Any suggestions are welcomed.

Rewind
-In Peter Christian fashion, I am calling out my boss who knew I was recording the Marquette game, yet still let it slip that they won.  In his defense, I was assuming MU would beat Centenary but it loses a lot of the fun of watching a game when you already know who wins.

With that said, a couple thoughts on Marquette’s season opener:
-We looked young and inexperienced which is to be expected, but it was even worse than I thought it would be.
-Lazar Hayward CANNOT get into foul trouble this season or else we are screwed.
-If Jimmy Butler can keep up his average of 27 points and 13 boards a game, we have a chance of making the tourney.

-It’s official.  Evan Turner replaces Tyreke Evans as the player I will openly man-crush on ALL SEASON LONG.  The point forward opened up Ohio State’s season with a triple-double (14 pts, 17 reb, 10 asts.) and has earned Stephen Curry status in terms of me DVR’ing every Buckeyes game I can because he has the chance to go off for a trip-doub every night he steps on the floor.

-Arkansas’ Rotnei Clarke scored 51 points against Alcorn State on 13 of 17 shooting from three.  WHO??

-Opening night upsets: #19 Mississippi State loses at home to Rider.  Oregon State (who I picked to finish 4th in the Pac-10) lost at home by 24 to Texas A&M-Chorpus Christi or TAMU-CC if alliteration is more your liking.

-One of the new additions to College Hoops 101 this year, the play of the week.  UNC super-frosh John Henson may look like he is 11 years old and be skinnier than Mary Kate Olsen, but check out this nasty block.

Fast Forward
-ESPN’s 24 hours of college basketball begins late Monday night and is headlined with Tuesday night games Gonzaga at Michigan State and Memphis at Kansas.  I may not sleep Monday night.

Butler at Nothwestern, Wednesday 7:00, BTN
-This could be a statement game if the Wildcats are serious about making their first ever trip to the tourney this year.

The Drive
Games watched through 11/15: 13

Games watched this past week (home teams in CAPS): 13

#4 NORTH CAROLINA 88, Florida International 72
Isaiah Thomas makes his collegiate coaching debut and his team doesn’t get waxed too badly.  Moral Victory.  UNC showed they are young and inexperienced, but loaded with talent once again.

#25 SYRACUSE 75, Albany 43
Jim Boeheim picks up his 800th win at ‘Cuse, and as we were told 187 times during the game, it’s about more than wins for Boeheim.  Orange sophomore Kris Joseph looks miles ahead of where he was last year.

#12 CALIFORNIA 75, Murray State 70
Murray St. kept it interesting and should be a team to reckon with in the Ohio Valley Conference.  I was not impressed with Cal, the favorite to win the Pac-10.

WISCONSIN 80, UW-Superior 47
Trevon Hughes had ten steals and was a point and a rebound away from a triple-double.  Impressive, even if it did come against a D-III team.

Syracuse Pittsburgh Basketball

#25 SYRACUSE 100, Robert Morris 60
Andy Rautins (7 three’s in 20 minutes) has one of the prettiest strokes in college hoops.  ‘Cuse has a lot of athletic, long forwards and are really getting after it on the defensive end.

#4 NORTH CAROLINA 89, N.C. Central 42
UNC was up 51-20 at the half.  Their starters came out and played sloppy to start the second half and Roy Williams was so aggravated that he subbed all five players on the floor.  Loved it.

#12 CALIFORNIA 95, Detroit 61
Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher get most of the pub for Cal, but watch out for Theo Robertson.  He can stroke it from deep and is strong around the basket.

#17 OHIO STATE 72, James Madison 44
Turner follows up his opening night triple-double with a 24 point, 17 rebound performance.  To quote Billy Madison after he loses the violin challenge in his decathlon against Eric, “Heeee’s goooooooood.”

MARQUETTE 85, Centenary 62
Read the Rewind portion for my thoughts on this game

#5 KENTUCKY 75, Morehead State 59
You are probably thinking the score should have been way more lopsided.  Morehead State is actually a really good mid-major team and freshman phenom John Wall did not play as he was sitting out the second of his two game suspension from the NCAA.

INDIANA 83, Howard 60
My one year of hating Tom Crean has passed and the misery that was last season has turned into optimism for the future at IU.  The Hoosiers’ freshmen looked solid especially two-guard Maurice Creek and forward Derek Elston.

lavender

ARIZONA 87, Northern Arizona 70
Zona sophomore Brendon Lavender is Ludacris Jr.  If you ever watch a Zona game, it’s fun to yell “LUDA!!!” whenever he does something good.

WISCONSIN 75, IPFW 46
Yawn.

Comments

  1. That Luda guy is hilarious, SIU had someone like that too who looked exacty like him recently…what was his name? Stetson Hairston I think.

Love your write up of the Sconnie-IPFW game

  2. if you’re not going to do all 330 teams…than you at least have to see all teams from the big conferences. including those that lose at home by 24 to the Islanders. How many people out there know TAMU-CC’s mascot off the top of tehir heads?

  3. I love the disgust in the video when North Carolina turns it over even when they are up by a millions points. That’s funny.
