It was a slow week on the college basketball scene due to most universities going through final exams and this holiday week will be very similar as teams have time off for Christmas. Every Monday at The Sports Bank, College Hoops 101 takes a look at everything that has happened in the past week and what to expect in the next seven days. This week’s edition features a confusing ending to a great game between two of the best “mid-majors,” and a look ahead to the first Big East game of the ’09-’10 season.
Rewind
-Strange, strange ending to the Xavier at Butler game Saturday. The Bulldogs’ Gordon Hayward hit the go-ahead basket with 1.2 seconds on the clock. Xavier calls time-out and refs review the play to make sure there was the proper time left in the game. When you see the replay, it clearly looks like there should be 1.2 seconds remaining. For some reason, the referees rule that the ball would not have completely exited the net and the clock was stopped too soon. Therefore, the ballgame was over and Butler picked up the win. To be completely honest, I am still confused about what happened.
-Someday I will vote in the AP poll. For now, here’s my top 10…
1. Kansas (Last Week Ranking: 1)
2. Syracuse (LWR: 2)
3. Kentucky (LWR: 3)
4. Texas (LWR: 4)
5. Purdue (LWR: 5)
6. West Virginia (LWR: 6)
7. Villanova (LWR: 7)
8. Duke (LWR: 9)
9. Michigan State (LWR: NR)
10. UConn (LWR: NR)
Fast Forward
Michigan State at Texas, Tuesday 8:00 ESPN2
The ‘Horns passed their first real test of the season Saturday with a win against North Carolina, can they make it two in a row when Sparty comes to Austin?
Texas A&M at Washington, Tuesday 10:00 FSN
If Washington loses this game, which is possible since the Aggies have been solid this season, the Pac-10 could have zero ranked teams next week.
West Virginia at Seton Hall, Sunday 2:30 CBS
And so begins Big East play… The unbeaten Mountaineers travel to Seton Hall to face a Pirates team that is off to a quick start and looking to prove they are a legit NCAA Tournament team.
The Drive
Games watched through 12/21: 92
Teams I have seen play this season: 90
Games watched this past week (home teams in CAPS): 11
#1 KANSAS 90, La Salle 65
La Salle’s head coach is a doctor, as in has his PHD. If I coached basketball and had a PHD, I’d rather be called coach then doctor.
XAVIER 83, #19 Cincinnati 79 2OT
WOW… A crazy intense game that almost had two bench-clearing brawls break out. Talk about an inner-city rivalry.
Mississippi State 72, UCLA 54
UCLA is bad. Ben Howland might be on the hot seat if things don’t turn around during Pac-10 play.

#8 TENNESSEE 77, Wyoming 58
This was an insanely long game. Thank goodness for DVR. I am not sure this Vols team is much better than last year’s. If you can keep them in a half-court game, they are very beatable.
MINNESOTA 89, Northern Illinois 48
Blake Hoffarber broke a school record with 8 three-pointers. This was such a slow week for college basketball that I actually watched this white wash.
WISCONSIN 90, Cal Poly 42
J.P Gavinksi dunked in this game for the Badgers. That is how big of a blow-out it was.
UAB 64, #25 Cincinnati 47
Paul Millsap’s little brother is a 6-6 wing player for UAB and has NBA potential. I get the whole team concept thing coaches preach, but I hate the “UAB” on the back of every player’s jersey where their last name should be. Just my thoughts.
#1 KANSAS 75, Michigan 64
The Wolverines live and die from three. They just 5-28 from deep hence their loss.
#2 Texas 103, # North Carolina 90
The ‘Horns had 26 offensive boards against a Heels team that regularly plays six guys 6’9 or taller. Roy Williams can not be happy.
MARQUETTE 78, North Florida 51
Big ups to my boy Jason Moe for finding this game on some channel called MASN so I could keep my streak alive of watching every MU game this season.
#17 BUTLER 69, Xavier 68
