For Liverpool FC, a Draw at Barcelona Would Feel Like a Genuine Victory

Last season, it was Real Madrid that stopped Liverpool FC just short of yet another piece of European silverware. This term, it might be the other half of the El Clasico rivalry, FC Barcelona, who do them in. Liverpool are the only team that has advanced to the UEFA Champions League semifinals in both this tournament and last year’s but it’s the Catalan club that is favored to hoist the old big ears trophy when all is said and done.

Given how Barca has turned their Catalonian home into an absolute fortress this term, it’s easy to see why most prognosticators are backing the Blaugrana to best the Merseyside club tomorrow night.

Arsenal FC Starting XI Prediction vs Valencia (Europa League)

europa-league

Thursday night sees Arsenal host Valencia in a match-up of two teams that are in somewhat similar positions when it comes to European football next season. In both the English Premier League and Spanish La Liga, no one seemed really interested in stepping up and claiming the fourth and final UEFA Champions League qualification slot.

It was there for the taking, in both regards, but Arsenal couldn’t get it done, and it looks like they’ll finish fifth in the table while Valencia are currently mired in sixth. For both teams, their best and maybe now only, route back into the big boy competition relies on advancing here and then winning the final.

For Arsenal, it’s looking like the best, and perhaps maybe the only, route back into the UEFA Champions League is via the Europa League title. The Gunners are just two points behind Chelsea for fourth place in the Premier League, but they no longer control their own destiny when it comes to finishing in the top four.

In European competition though, it’s a different story. The Gunners will welcome Spanish side Valencia in on Thursday, for the first leg of their UEL semifinal tie.

Chelsea FC Starting XI Prediction at Eintracht Frankfurt (Europa League)

Chelsea FC still have both routes back into the UEFA Champions League available to them, and as we head down the stretch of the season here. For the Blues, the odds of getting back in is quite favorable via both avenues (top four finish in Premier League or UEFA Europa League title), but the job is not done yet.

The west London side next heads to the air hub of Europe, Frankfurt Germany, where they will stage the road leg of their semifinal tie against Eintracht Frankfurt. These two teams have yet to meet in any UEFA competition, but the Blues have historically down well against German clubs.

Liverpool FC Starting XI Prediction at Barcelona (UCL Semifinals)

liverpool

It’s very possible that Liverpool FC could end this extremely memorable season without a trophy, despite all the big victories won and fine form displayed. Their battle with Manchester City for the Premier League title will go down to the very last minute of the season’s final day.

And in order to return to the UEFA Champions League final, they’ll need to get the tournament’s favorites FC Barcelona. That means a clash against their good old friend- winger Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian and former Liverpool man is poised to start at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

FC Barcelona Starting XI Prediction vs Liverpool (UCL Semifinals)

FC Barcelona will welcome Liverpool to Catalonia in mid-week for the first leg of their UCL semifinal tie in what promises to be a truly electric night at the Camp Nou. Barca are big favorites, but they know the challenge ahead of them in facing the runner-up from last year’s competition.

The Catalan club has a special plan as to how they will attack the Reds, and it seems the word is out on that. According to ESPN, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde will emulate the approach of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who achieved a win and a draw in his two meetings with Liverpool this season.

An early happy May Day to all the Liverpool FC supporters, FC Barcelona fans and neutrals who are highly anticipating the UEFA Champions League clash on May 1 at the Camp Nou. It’s the first leg of the semifinal tie that is considered the “real” final.

No offense to Ajax vs Tottenham Hotspur, but that match is essentially the “junior varsity” of the two UCL semifinal ties. There are storylines aplenty here, with perhaps Philippe Coutinho the biggest headliner of all. Look for him to line up on the left side Wednesday night as he tries to help lead Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and company to victory against his former side.

Eric Bailly Out for the Season, Marcus Rashford Doubt for Huddersfield Match

There were a few casualties for Manchester United in their 1-1 draw at home with Chelsea today. First and foremost, their top four chances are pretty much nil at this point. Yes, their last two games are against the Premier League’s bottom side and a team that will likely join them in getting relegated, but today was a must win for the Red Devils.

Chelsea and Arsenal kept giving United opportunities to get back into the top four, but United just wouldn’t seize them. They have no one to blame but themselves.

Manchester United Shows Signs of Life vs Chelsea in First Half

manchester united chelsea

It’s not so much a battle for the top four anymore as it is a stumble. You’ve got three teams- Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea all essentially playing hot potato with that fourth and final UEFA Champions League qualification slot.

For United especially, they came into the Premier League weekend’s headliner fixture, at home against Chelsea, with riding a lot of dreadful streaks. The list of abominable stats included: lost seven in their last nine games, scored two goals (both penalties) in the last five games, no goals from open play in almost nine hours of football, the worst overall run of form since 1962 and two shots on goal in the last two games.
