Win or Lose, Ohio State Has Already Restored the B1G

Editor’s note: this Ohio State and B1G essay is by guest contributor Hans Hetrick

Let us revel in the 2016 Ohio State Michigan game one more time before the bowl season plays out.

This year’s version of The Game, a rivalry that badly needed a classic game, deserves another tribute. The annual post-Thanksgiving matchup between the Wolverines and the Buckeyes gave us a game to be truly thankful for, a rollercoaster ride of great defense, missed field goals, a last second game-tying, field goal, two overtimes, controversial officiating, an unusually animated Urban Meyer, and a mercurial Jim Harbaugh turned up to eleven.

Brent Musburger Nails It Regarding New Year’s Eve College Football

Legendary broadcaster Brent Musburger doesn’t just “get it.” He absolutely knocked it out of the park on this one. Once again this year, College Football is trying desperately to claim New Year’s Eve as it’s day, by holding the Final Four playoff games on December 31st.

Once again, it’s not going happen, and the ratings will tank, like they did last year. It’s just not happening, as Musburger pointed out, and why. In the 2017-18 bowl cycle, the semifinals will shift to January 1st (Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl).

Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial Propel Man United to Fergie Time Style Victory

This New Year’s Eve Manchester United gave us  “A Knight’s Tale.” No, tonight’s 2-1 win over Middlesbrough didn’t involve prose from Geoffrey Chaucer, or acting from Heath Ledger, but instead the magic of Sir Alex Ferguson. Fitting too as today was Fergie’s 75th birthday.

It was the kind of resilient come from behind victory that would really make former manager Sir Alex proud. It was truly “Fergie Time” when Anthony Martial equalized in the 85′.

Here’s the footage:

Harry Kane Jokes About NFL Career After Awful PK Miss

Tottenham Hotspur and England Striker Harry Kane really gaffed on a penalty kick today. How bad? Well, we’re not quite sure if the ball has even landed yet.

Was Christian Benteke Sold Because he broke Jurgen Klopp’s Glasses?

Last March, Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp was highly criticized, from a few different people, for how he handled Christian Benteke in full view of fans, media and television cameras during a match.

It just seemed like the German boss and the Belgian striker never really quite gelled together. Benteke, a Brendan Rodgers acquisition, fizzled at Anfield, and ended up one of the season’s top flops, contributing to Rodgers being terminated in early October of 2015.

Danny Kanell Disrespect Motivates Northwestern to Victory

danny kanell

ESPN Analyst and former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell is a polarizing figure.

That’s not news, as he’s got a bit of a football Dan Dakich vibe to him at times. “A little bit” as the Robert DeNiro parody on Saturday Night Live would say, “a little bit.” Kanell and his fellow ESPN college football pundits did not think too highly of 6-6 Northwestern this postseason, and NU Coach Pat Fitzgerald was quick to point that out today.

MVP Justin Jackson Dominates Pinstripe Bowl; Leads NU to Victory

pinstripe bowl

With his MVP performance in the Pinstripe Bowl, it seemed like Northwestern running back Justin Jackson took the lyrics of Alicia Keys to heart.

You know some of the more motivational lines from “Empire of State of Mind,” her power ballad about New York City:

“Now you’re in New York….there’s nothing you can’t do…these streets will make you feel brand new, big lights will inspire you!”

United Icon Ryan Giggs Reported Front-Runner for Swansea City Job

Ryan Giggs wasn’t offered a job, or should I say “a gig” (sorry, that pun was too easy) on Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff that he would have been interested in. As the Mourinho regime commenced, Giggs then made his own personal Brexit from Manchester United after his 29 years of service with the club.

Firmino Starting XI Spot Never in Doubt Despite Drink Driving Charge

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino was never doubt for today’s match against Stoke City, despite his being charged with drink driving. Liverpool beat Stoke 4-1 at home tonight, and LFC Manager Jurgen Klopp said that Firmino’s spot in the starting XI was never in doubt.

Gary Cahill Hopes Chelsea Can Break League Win Streak Record

While Chelsea FC Manager Antonio Conte doesn’t really embrace discussing the team’s current winning streak, and the chance to make history, Blues Defender Gary Cahill does.

On Boxing Day, Chelsea beat Bournemouth 3-0 to set a new club milestone for consecutive wins. This was their 12th victory in a row and if they win the next two, they’ll tie 2001-2002 Arsenal (the Gunners matched that mark again the following season) for the most consecutive triumphs in Premier League history.
