David De Gea stays (for now); paperwork arrives late

According to the most respected journalist in all of Spanish football, Guillem Balague, the David De Gea paperwork did not arrive in time for the transfer deadline. That means De Gea stays at Manchester United.

The long, drawn out, ridiculously protracted and exceedingly tedious soap opera of a transfer saga is now FINALLY OVER.

The trend of college football stars embracing world football continues. Notre Dame Wide Receiver Chris Brown is a big supporter of Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund; who are currently in first place. Northwestern wideout Christian Jones is a Tottenham Hotspur fan. You can hear his Premier League picks at this link. Jones’ teammate Ifeadi Odenigbo likes Manchester City.

Former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner was honored to have his picture taken with Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs, and Wolverines football players were thrilled to see Cristiano Ronaldo take to the pitch in his home stadium last summer.

Man United send Anders Lindegaard to West Brom

Time to talk more Manchester United news and notes. And it’s been a very busy 11th hour of the summer transfer window. Adnan Januzaj was sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund. Chicharito was sold to Bayer Leverkusen.

United have acquired young striker Anthony Martial from Monaco. There’s talk that the David de Gea situation is about to be resolved, with Keylor Navas possibly coming back the other way. (Still waiting on confirmation with that)

Liverpool send Fabio Borini to Sunderland for £8 million

This will definitely be a summer of transition at The Kop. There’s been a whole host of changes that came to Anfield. Obviously, the Raheem Sterling soap opera was Liverpool topic #1 this summer transfer window, but the acquisitions of Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino were really big deals too.

As we get closer to the end of deadline day, we have yet another deal confirmed.

De Gea to Real Madrid finally done? Outlets claim MUFC get Keylor Navas in return

Comedian and sociopolitical pundit John Oliver described the credentials of professional “Social Media Experts” thusly:

“all it takes is wanting it bad enough, and not caring about whether strangers hate you or not.”

Sorry for quoting a Liverpool supporter in the intro, but the quote is somewhat apt when reporting on the never ending story that is the David de Gea transfer saga. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of people out there doing excellent reporting out there as the transfer window ticks away its final hours but…

VIDEO: Van Gaal SNAPS at reporter over De Gea question, ends media session

Watching Manchester United surrender a 1-0 lead and lose today, you just knew that Louis van Gaal was going to be even more surly and condescending than usual in his post game media opportunities. It also helps that a reporter, who is just doing the job he’s supposed to do, happened to ask him about the most sensitive United topic of all, the David de Gea transfer saga.

Man United send Chicharito to Bayer Leverkusen for £12m

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez wanted first team football. That’s what he kept saying every time Chicharito transfer rumors popped up. Multiple reports (and really I mean multiple reports as just about everybody is reporting this) indicate that Chicharito is headed to Bayer Leverkusen. His move from Manchester United will give the club a cash infusion of £12 million reportedly.

What Bill Cubit brings (and doesn’t bring) to Illini table

Robin Scholz/The News-Gazette Sportstalk with Bill Cubit, Illinois FB offensive coordinator on Monday, September 30, 2013.

Bill Cubit is probably not the long term answer for Illini football; but they can certainly do worse. They just did much worse in fact. As former Illini and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Tackle Akeem Spence Tweeted yesterday in the wake of Tim Beckman‘s dismissal- “Illinois just got better.”

Illini football: seven recent AWFUL coordinators

Since John Mackovic left Illini football behind for Texas in 1991 the program has had four coaches; all of which went under .500 during their time in Champaign. They (Lou Tepper, Ron Turner, Ron Zook and Tim Beckman) combined to lose 53 more games than they won. OUCH! The coordinators, many of which were extremely incompetent and/or “eccentric” (or you could say “neurotic”), are a big reason for all the losing.

Kevin De Bruyne FINALLY signs with Manchester City

Manchester City have FINALLY signed Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin de Bruyne. It’s completely, totally, utterly official now. The German club have sent him De Bruyne to Manchester for a club record £55 million fee. This is the second time this summer that City have broken the club record for a transfer fee (Raheem Sterling £49 million back in July, that one itself was a long, tedious journey)

Manchester United finally get another goal in Premier League play, just the second scoring strike credited to them on the season. Although he’s only been at United since January of 2014, Juan Mata has taken a leadership role, issuing warnings to his teammates when necessary, telling them that it’s crunch time and that they need to step up right now.
