New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers: franchise twins

aaron rodgersbrady

In 1997, the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots came together for a Super Bowl in New Orleans. In 2007, the Pack finished a couple plays short of joining the NE Pats in the NFL title game once again. This season, a Packers-Patriots finale could very well happen; and it’s becoming a trendy pick to actually forecast this scenario.

Nebraska fires Bo Pelini; buyout is $7.6m

Bo Pelini calm

In last year’s regular season finale, a 38-17 loss to Iowa, Nebraska Cornhuskers Coach Bo Pelini went rogue in his post-game press conference. He basically did a Coach Petey Bell at the end of “Blue Chips” moment.

Or you could say he did a more subtle version of Jim Breuer’s character in “Half Baked” saying goodbye to his record store coworkers.

Bo Pelini used the word chickenshit, he provoked officials, he accused the opposing coach, the Hawkeyes Kirk Ferentz of behaving worse than himself and he blamed the media for his troubles. Bo Pelini wasn’t done. Bo Pelini appeared to be saying goodbye to the NU program and the Big Ten by telling everybody off; in his own usual ornery way.

He was one year early:

VIDEO: Lane Kiffin celebrates TD reception BEFORE ball is thrown

Watch Alabama Crimson Tide Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin celebrate the fact that the Auburn secondary badly blew a coverage in the Iron Bowl. Take a look at the bottom middle of the screen, you can see Kiffin throw his hands up and celebrate a touchdown before the ball is even thrown, let alone caught, let alone broke the plane of the goal line.

Angel Di Maria suffers hamstring injury; latest updates

Angel Di Maria suffered an injury in Manchester United’s 3-nil win over Hull City at Old Trafford Tuesday, and it threw a massive scare into Louis van Gaal’s side and their supporters. Reilly O’Toole finally lives up to Reilly O’Toole hype

This piece on Reilly O’Toole is from Sports Bank contributor Drew Rossi.

When the Gatorade state player of the year commits to his home state’s university, standards get set. Fans expect 300 yard games and wins over rivals. However, these standards are usually expected to be met well before that player’s final regular season game.

The pride of Wheaton-Warrenville South, Reilly O’Toole, finally provided the signature moment Illini fans have been waiting four years for. O’Toole threw for 147 yards and 3 touchdowns to three different receivers and added another 147 yards on the ground, leading Illinois to a 47-33 victory.

Ohio St. now turns to Cardale Jones ( the “I don’t play school” guy)

Ohio State freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett suffered a right ankle fracture in the second half of the Buckeyes’ 42-28 victory over their hated rival Michigan today. He is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow and he’s done for the season.

Illini basketball: offensive improvement, but ways to go yet

rayvonte-rice illini basketball

Illini basketball entered yesterday as the number one scoring team in all of college basketball (97.1 points per game). They got off a ridiculously fast start and crusied off the first five minutes to finish off a 88-62 drubbing of Indiana State. The Sycamores were arguably the second best team in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. This year, ISU is kind of rebuilding so no one really knows what they are.

By the time Illini basketball tipped off versus Baylor, they had slipped slightly to third nationally at 95.6 ppg. Then they took on a Baylor defense allowing just 33% field goal and 48.4 points per game allowed for the season.

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will buy at least 1 player in January

“In January, we will try to get at least one body in,” The Daily Mail reports Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger as saying.

“You have to give us time. We do our job as always. This season we bought five players who are all top quality, so I think we have done really well. We will try to repeat that.”

Robin van Persie on his final chance at Man United?

Striker Robin van Persie and Manager Louis van Gaal are countrymen, close co-workers and (some of said) friends. Now it seems the relationship is strained. Or maybe “it’s just business” as they say.

Van Gaal removed Van Persie during the win at Arsenal because he was not pleased at all with his play. RVP only touched the ball 13 times, plus the kick-off.
