Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld will miss his club’s London derby against Chelsea this weekend. Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed today that the back will be absent Spurs take on the current Premier League table toppers on Saturday.
Via Metro: “Pochettino confirmed following Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Monaco that Alderweireld would miss the game in west London and Diego Costa will fancy his chances up against a makeshift Tottenham defence.”
With Spurs now eliminated from UEFA Champions League, the club can focus on domestic competition. They are currently four points adrift of the league leaders, this will be a very meaningful fixture. Fifth place Spurs could certainly use Toby Alderweireld to try and contain high flying Chelsea, but obviously he remains unavailable.
Alderweireld has been in missing in action since October, when Tottenham played West Bromwich Albion to a 1-1 draw. Chelsea are currently riding a 6-0 streak in which they’ve outscored their opponents 17-0.
