The Sports Bank will be counting down to the opening tip of the 2012-13 NBA season with team by team previews starting with the worst and working our way to the title contenders.  There is no lockout this time around so let’s get going.

Year two of the post-LeBron James makeover in Cleveland is underway.  Led by reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, Kyrie Irving, the future is getting brighter for the Cavs but they are still a couple of seasons away from being a legitimate playoff contender.

2011 NBA Draft re-do with 2012 hindsight

It is an annual tradition here during the NBA All-Star break to re-do the NBA Draft lottery from the previous year.  The Sports Bank’s NBA Draft Nerd, David Kay and Peter Christian will alternate re-drafting the top fourteen picks in the 2011 NBA Draft taking into account what they know about the rookies based off their performances so far this season.  They will factor in how each team’s roster looked at the time of the draft and give their reasons as to why the selection would be made.

Cleveland Cavaliers look to build around Kyrie Irving this off-season

All things considered, there should actually be optimism regarding the Cleveland CavaliersKyrie Irving appears to be the face of the franchise that Cavs fans hoped they were getting with the top overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.  With four of the top 34 picks in the 2012 NBA Draft and a ton of cap space, management should look to build around Irving this off-season.

Cleveland Cavaliers select Tristan Thompson with 4th overall pick in 2011 NBA draft

With the 4th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Tristan Thompson, a forward from Texas.

Surprised by this pick? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

After Enes Kanter went 3rd overall to the Jazz, the popular belief was that the Cavs would select Jonas Valanciunas as the 4th pick. Few, if any, predicted Thompson would be selected, but Dan Gilbert is no stranger to stirring up controversy.

Texas’ Tristan Thompson Major Beneficiary of WEAK NBA Draft Class

The Texas Longhorns Tristan Thompson is probably going to capitalize from some of the top prospects in college basketball returning to school. The decisions of blue chip prospects like Harrison Barnes, Jared Sullinger and Perry Jones not declaring for the 2011 NBA Draft is will end up making Thompson a ton of money.

Thompson could end up a late-lottery pick even though he may not be ready to contribute major minutes right away.

“There are probably 25 guys that have been told they’re lottery picks, but only 14 that actually are. I think it comes down to your workotus and how you produce in comparison to the guys that are at your position,” Thompson said at the NBA Draft combine.

Tristan Thompson Playing beyond his years for Longhorns

One thing was clear at Madison Square Garden after Thursday and Friday’s 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches v. Cancer – Texas is going to be a scary good team.

The Longhorns boast some of the top recruits in the nation that have seamlessly stepped in and contributed immediately. Mix “diaper dandies” Tristan Thompson – who early in the season is playing well beyond his years– and point guard Corey Joseph with sophomore Jordan Hamilton and Texas might be primed for a deep run in March.

The AP No. 20 team in the nation will go as far as its young guns will take them.
