Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With a loaded recruiting class and one key transfer, Sean Miller is stacking talent in Tuscon and should have the Arizona Wildcats competing with UCLA for the Pac 12 title.

The early exits of Terrence Ross and Tony Wroten to the NBA Draft set the defending Pac 12 champion Washington Huskies back this year as they easily lose their top two players from a year ago.  Still, Lorenzo Romar’s team has enough talent to finish in the upper half of the conference and compete for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

I admit that I missed the boat on the Colorado Buffaloes last season when I predicted them to struggle in their inaugural year in the Pac-12.  Instead, Tad Boyle’s team earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will push for a return trip again this year.

2011-2012 was a train wreck for the USC Trojans basketball program.  They were ravaged by injury, lost a school record 26 game, picked up just one victory in a weak Pac-12 conference, and finished second to last in Division One in scoring.  While Kevin O’Neill welcomes some key transfers to the team, he also loses a couple of valuable contributors from last year.

The Oregon State Beavers picked up their first twenty win season in more than twenty years yet still weren’t even close to an NCAA Tournament berth.  Though they return seven of their top eight scorers, Craig Robinson’s team still doesn’t figure to be a real threat in the Pac-12.

Despite finishing in second place in the Pac-12, the Oregon Ducks missed out on the NCAA Tournament.  With only four returning players, the Ducks are in a bit of a re-building mode this season.

The Arizona State Sun Devils have fallen on hard times in recent years.  They are a combined 10-30 in Pac-12 play the past two seasons.  Herb Sendek once again lost several players to transfer during the off-season but does get Jahii Carson eligible.

The Utah Utes came in dead last in our rankings a year ago but move up one whole spot this time around.  In their inaugural season in the Pac-12, the Utes won just six total games and the outlook is not any better heading into this season.  Second year head coach Larry Krystowiak lost six players to transfer and has 11 players who didn’t see a single minute in a Utah uniform last year.

Pac-12 Basketball Preview and Predictions

ucla hot cheerleaders

It’s still weird to write “Pac-12” but in the ever changing college sports landscape, the conference expanded with the additions of Colorado and Utah.  Those two schools won’t help the Pac-12 become a stronger conference during the 2011-2012 season, but the league should be slightly more competitive as a whole.

Here are my Pac-12 predictions for the 2011-2012 season.  Click on the school”s name for an in-depth breakdown of each team.
