Los Angeles Clippers look to take next step this off-season

I’d say, “they’re back” but let’s be honest; the Los Angeles Clippers were never truly here to begin with.  For just the fifth time since the franchise made the move across country to the west coast, the Clips made the post-season, even advancing to the semifinals.  The arrival of Chris Paul played a major role in the team stepping out of the shadow of the Lakers.  However, there are still some moves to be made this off-season if the Clippers are going to take the next step of emerging as a legit Western Conference title contender.

Now that the NBA regular season is over, fourteen teams are already looking ahead to next season.  The 2012 NBA free agency class features more talent than the 2011 class but still nowhere near 2010 when guys like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Carlos Boozer, and David Lee were all on the market.  Here are the top ten NBA unrestricted free agents available this summer.  Click here for The Sports Bank’s 2012 NBA Mock Draft.

Baron Davis Knicks

The quality of available NBA free agents continues to dwindle as the start of the season is fast approaching.  Here is a breakdown of the latest signings including Baron Davis joining the Knicks and Nick Young, Aaron Afflalo, and Rodney Stuckey all re-signing with their teams.  Plus, the Sacramento Kings have to void the contract given to Chuck Hayes after he fails his physical.

2011 NBA Free Agent Shooting Guard Rankings

With the NBA Lockout coming to an end, we now know that teams can start signing free agents on December 9th.  Like the NFL experienced once their lockout ended, there will be a frenzy period for teams to fill out rosters with the season tipping off on Christmas.

With the new labor agreement, there are some changes to NBA free agency.  A player can only receive a four-year maximum deal (five-year deal if they re-sign with their current team) and beginning in the 2013-14 season, teams will start receiving a harsher luxury tax penalty if they exceed the salary cap.  Teams will now only have three days to match an offer sheet for one of their restricted free agents.  Also, some names will be added to free agency after teams decide which players will be released under the one-time amnesty clause option.

With the salary cap expected to be around $58 million, half of the teams will under that number and have room to sign free agents.  Check out the bottom of the page to see which teams have space and how much.

Here is a look at the top free agent power forwards, where they might sign, and what kind of payday they will receive.

Washington Wizards Look to Build Around John Wall

Like we are currently seeing in the NFL, the 2011 NBA off-season is up in the air with a lockout looming.  Free agency could be delayed and completely restructured depending on the new agreement reached by the owners and players.  Still, The Sports Bank will break down all thirty NBA teams over the next six weeks to see what areas they need to address in the off-season.

After blowing up their roster at the end of the 2009-2010 season, the Washington Wizards have put together a solid blueprint for their re-building process.  The Wiz enter the off-season looking to add to a core of young talent led by John Wall.

The 2011 NBA free agency period is very much in limbo with the potential of a lockout looming.  The rules of the game can completely change in terms of how long/how much a player’s contract can be depending on what is agreed upon by the owners and players association.  Regardless of what happens, here are my rankings for the free agent shooting guards this off-season and where they could possibly end up once all the dust is settled.

Top 2011 NBA Free Agents

The 2010 NBA free agent class was unlike anything we have seen in the history of the league; loaded with superstar talent switching homes and of course, “The Decision.”  The 2011 free agent class is going to be the exact opposite.  It is going to be weaker than a Survivor contestant on the 37th day of eating nothing more than mangoes and rice.

Since I first posted this article at the end of last July, a lot of the possible big names in the 2011 class have signed extensions that will prevent them from hitting the market.  That list includes Carmelo Anthony, Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Tony Parker.  Here is an updated look at the very underwhelming crop of free agents that will be available this off-season.
