Philadelphia Eagles Coach Chip Kelly quasi-endorses The Sports Bank

For the 2011-12 holidays I was in sunny Pasadena, enjoying the absolutely first rate hospitality a media member receives when covering the Rose Bowl; the greatest bowl game of them all. And to top it all off:

I’m told by the winning coach of a BCS game (Oregon Ducks’ Chip Kelly) that my business and marketing ideas are superb! In a crowded room full of my media peers no less!

Wisconsin Badgers 2013 NFL Draft Rewind

Montee Ball denver

Who knew that the University of Wisconsin would become one of the best factories for NFL prospects, it’s surely come a long way in the last twenty years.

The Badgers nine top-75 picks over the last three years are as many as Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan combined. The only two schools in the nation with more top-75 picks over that span are Alabama (13) and LSU (12).

Here’s what I thought of each of Wisconsin’s three picks in the 2013 NFL Draft:

Wisconsin’s Montee Ball a perfect fit for the Denver Broncos

NFL: Combine

With the 26th pick in the second round (58th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos made a long-life dream come true when they selected Wisconsin Badgers running back Montee Ball.

Montee Ball grew up idolizing the Broncos as a small kid, particularly running back Terrell Davis (1998 MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion).

“It’s a dream come true,” Ball said. “I’ve been a Broncos fan since the age of seven, and now to be a Bronco, is something very special.” [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers held their annual Pro Day on Wednesday and in attendance was the architect of the Green Bay Packers potent offense.

Packers General Manager, Ted Thompson, made the short drive to Madison to take a look at a small group of Badgers prospects who have high hopes of being drafted in the upcoming  2013 NFL Draft.

Wisconsin’s most notable prospect is Montee Ball, a highly regarded running back and the NCAA’s all-time leader in touchdowns.

Could Thompson and the Packers select Ball with the 26th or 55th selection in April? [Read more…]

Not a lot of offense in this year’s Rose Bowl as Stanford held off Wisconsin 20-14 to send the Badgers to three straight losses in “The Granddaddy of Them All.”

Third time not a charm as Wisconsin Badgers lose Rose Bowl to a great Stanford team

Kevin Hogan Rose Bowl

Another trip to Pasadena and another loss to a great team at the Rose Bowl.

Stanford came into the game as one of the best-rounded teams in the country and left with a 20-14 win.

To get there, the Cardinal had to fight off a tough Wisconsin Badgers team who despite five losses proved they can stick with one anyone in the country.

Can the Wisconsin Badgers pull off the ultimate upset in Pasadena?

Big Ten Championship - Nebraska v Wisconsin

Story-lines run thick in the 99th installment of the Rose Bowl between the #8 Stanford Cardinal and Wisconsin Badgers.

The Badgers are playing in their third straight Rose Bowl and look to hall-of-fame coach Barry Alvarez to improve upon his perfect 3-0 record in Pasasdena.

Stanford enters the game on a three-game streak in BCS Bowls (Fiesta in 2011 and Orange in 2010) as well and is perhaps one of the hottest teams in the country with their last four wins coming against ranked opponents.

Montee Ball wins the Doak Walker Award for nation’s best running back

Another fairly famous Wisconsin Badgers running back won the Doak Walker Award during his senior season and that guy was Ron Dayne in 1999.

Montee Ball throws his name in the argument for best Badgers running back ever by taking home the award for the nation’s top running back on Thursday night.

Wisconsin Badgers three-headed monster at running back has returned

You don’t have to go back very far to a time when the Wisconsin Badgers had three dangerous tailbacks.

In 2010, Montee Ball, James White and John Clay all nearly eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark en route to the Badgers first Rose Bowl appearance since 2000.

Two years later and two more Rose Bowl births, the Badgers are right back where they started with freshman Melvin Gordon joining Ball and White in the most dangerous backfield in all of college football. [Read more…]

Wisconsin is going back to Cali for a third straight Rose Bowl

With credit to the late Notorious B.I.G., the Wisconsin Badgers are going, going, back, back to Cali after demolishing the Nebraska Cornhuskers 70-31 in the Big Ten Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The 70 points the Badgers (8-5) scored are tied for the second most in the modern era in school-history and tied for the most ever in a conference championship game (Texas had 70 in 2005).

UW’s three-headed monster is back and fiercer than ever as Montee Ball, James White and Melvin Gordon combined for 539 yards rushing and nine total touchdowns.

Big Ten Title Game between Wisconsin and Nebraska has B1G ramifications

For the Wisconsin Badgers, a win at the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis would mean three straight Big Ten titles and three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances, a feet which is unprecedented in school history.

For the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a win in the Championship game would be their official welcome to the conference as they move on from a successful history in the Big 12 and start anew in just their second year in the Big Ten.

Who said there wasn’t a lot at stake in Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday?

Overtime is unkind to the Wisconsin Badgers, lose 24-21 at Penn State

Overtime has been unkind to the Wisconsin Badgers who have lost three overtime games in the past four weeks. Moreover, the Badgers (7-5, 4-4) last nine losses are by a touchdown or less.

Penn State fought back from a first-half deficit to beat Wisconsin, 24-21, in what was their last game of the season.

The Badgers only real highlight of the day was Montee Ball breaking the NCAA all-time touchdown record.
