2014 Winter Classic: Wings vs. Leafs preview

michigan-stadium-field

The 2014 Winter Classic will be a “home game” for the Detroit Red Wings. They’ll take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, the most valuable franchise in all of hockey in an all original six showdown. It will be held at Michigan Stadium, home of UM Wolverines college football.

Like I wrote around the New Year, the Wings are the natural next host for the event, and THE BIG HOUSE would is the best venue for the next event. The Detroit Lions’ home stadium, Ford Field, is a dome and thus ineligible to host the game. Michigan Stadium previously hosted The Big Chill at the Big House vs. Michigan State and it is the current world record holder for attendance (104, 173) at a hockey game. The 2014 Winter Classic on New Year’s Day marks the first time a stadium dedicated solely to college football has hosted the Winter Classic. All five previous events were held at MLB and NFL stadiums.

kanye-west-big-ten-football

Can’t leave Big Ten football alone the game needs me. Notorious B.I.G. once said that he raps about the ghetto because that’s what he knows. And…”if I worked at McDonald’s, I’d be rapping about Big Macs and fries.”

You write and talk what you know and live. And I know Big Ten football. We’re still a ways away from Big Ten football media days. Well, less than two weeks now. The preseason is indeed here, time for some WAY TOO Early Big Ten football power rankings

Mitch McGary, Glenn Robinson III returning to Michigan

With Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III coming back, just how good will the Wolverines be next year? Sure, they lost Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke to the NBA Draft. And that’s huge. But look how much they have coming back.

The #1 ranked power forward and #2 overall recruit in the nation (according to ESPNU) Mitch McGary picked the Michigan Wolverines, over the Duke Blue Devils or Florida Gators. Now he’s picking Ann Arbor over the NBA Draft. Maybe Michigan won’t be just a “college football school” any more?

Keys for the #3 Indiana Hoosiers against the #1 Michigan Wolverines

20101208042725!Indiana_University_(Athletics)_logo

Fans, analysts and (surely) the teams themselves have had this one circled all season.

Indiana and Michigan were projected to be the Big Ten’s two best teams before the beginning of the 2012-13 college basketball campaign, and each has held true to form — even if in inverse order to this point.

And at 9 p.m. today, the Hoosiers and Wolverines — both with 7-1 Big Ten marks — will go at it for sole possession of first place in the conference in Assembly Hall.

The No. 3 Hoosiers have won 14 of the last 15 home games against the Wolverines, who are No. 1 for the first time since the infamous “Fab Five” squad, but this unquestionably is the most talented roster Michigan has had since Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson and Jimmy King were causing sparks to fly in all directions in Ann Arbor.

How does Indiana win tonight?

#10 Michigan Wolverines: College Basketball 111 in 111

trey-burke

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

I think I’m one of the few people not drinking the Michigan Wolverines kool-aid this season.  Don’t get me wrong, they will be a very good team, I’m just not buying them as a preseason top five squad quite yet.

For Mitt Romney, Badgers, Wolverines fight songs have political overtones (video)

wisconsin-marching-band

Mitt Romney is so humorless, he’s hilarious!

Now I’m not saying you need a Chris Rock type as your presidential candidate, I’m just saying Romney is so bland, he’s like a PR department disguised as a human being. In this video clip from the Colbert Report, Stephen references a Romney interview where he tries to be funny by telling a humorous story.

He fails.

But his process talks about how the Michigan Wolverines “Hail to the Victors” was used for political propaganda purposes by his Dad. And how the Wisconsin Badgers “On Wisconsin” had socioeconomic double meaning for his family’s campaign/record of governance.

Who says sports aren’t political?

Columbus radio host fired over Desmond Howard death remark

Sports talk radio host Scott Torgerson was fired by 97.1 The Fan in Columbus Ohio, the company announced via Twitter today.

Torgerson, the co-host of “The Common Man & The Torg” show was initially suspended on October 17 after he tweeted that he wished ESPN Gameday’s Desmond Howard would “get fired or die” so he could watch Gameday again. Being on the flagship station for Ohio State Buckeyes sports, he was making a desperate on disgusting appeal to the worst elements in Buckeye Nation.

He has since deleted his Twitter account. What a repulsive thing to say about the former Michigan Wolverines star.
