Big Ten football power rankings: lipstick on a pig edition

big-ten-football-colbert

During Big Ten football Saturdays like this, how do you spin what happened? How do you put lipstick on these pigs? And even though Northwestern out-gained an AWFUL Western Michigan team by just 126 yards, they’ve still earned the second slot.

You can argue that a different Big Ten football team deserves to be there. But my argument is pretty solid for NU. Also, Illinois gave up 615 yards and lost “at home,” and yet they move UP not down this week.

Michigan Wolverines Trey Burke: top ten NBA Draft pick?

trey-burke

Trey Burke, sophomore point guard for the Michigan Wolverines was just named the Oscar Robertson national player of the year. And since only coaches and players care about these awards, we won’t expound on this any further. Articles/posts about awards are always web traffic killers.

Although it is interesting that this season has no clear-cut, defined #1 overall college basketball player. Trey Burke has exceeded expectations in Ann Arbor and brought the Wolverines to the Final Four this weekend. The Columbus, Ohio native and Big Ten Player of the Year led the Wolverines (30-7) to a 16-0 start, a number one national ranking (Jan. 28) and the school’s first Final Four appearance since 1993.

2012 Big Ten/ACC Challenge Preview and Predictions

big ten/acc challenge

The twelve-game Big Ten/ACC Challenge tips off tonight with the top four ranked teams in the nation; Duke, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State all in action.  After losing the first ten challenges, the Big Ten looks for their fourth straight win in this battle of power conferences.  To be completely blunt; they should have zero problem doing so as the Big Ten has far more depth than the ACC.

#10 Michigan Wolverines: College Basketball 111 in 111

trey-burke

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

I think I’m one of the few people not drinking the Michigan Wolverines kool-aid this season.  Don’t get me wrong, they will be a very good team, I’m just not buying them as a preseason top five squad quite yet.

With the Kentucky Wildcats cutting down the nets last night, we can officially close the book on the 2011-2012 college basketball season.  Hoop junkies like myself are already looking ahead to next season so allow me to present to you my way too early 2012-2013 preseason Top 25.

There are still several factors that could alter a teams roster between now and the start of next season.  Some of the top players are still debating on whether or not to enter the NBA Draft, some teams will lose players to transfer, and five McDonald’s All-Americans remain undecided on their college decision including the top two recruits in the 2012 class; Shabazz Muhammad and Nerlens Noel.

So here is my preliminary preseason Top 25.  I will updated these rankings once the NBA Draft early entries list is complete and Muhammaed and Noels make their college decision.  Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here for my way too early preseason rankings from last season.)

Trey Burke Considering NBA

When Michigan fell to 13-seeded Ohio in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, its quest for its first Sweet 16 appearance since 1994 was definitively lost, but the Wolverines may be on the verge of suffering an even bigger loss in the near future.

Freshman point guard Trey Burke, who led the Wolverines in scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (4.6 apg), is considering entering the NBA draft, according to TheWolverine.com. According to his father, Benji Burke, two of the major factors weighing heavily in his decision are the way elevated his play at the end of the season as well as the relatively weak pool of point guards in this year’s draft class.

13-Seed Ohio Upsets Michigan: Rapid Reaction

Two years ago, the 14-seed Ohio Bobcats pulled off an impressive upset over 3-seed Georgetown. So when the Bobcats knocked off 4-seed Michigan in this year’s tournament, it wasn’t as much of a surprise.

The Bobcats shot 51.2 percent from the field, and didn’t allow Michigan to get into a rhythm on offense for most of the night. The Wolverines were held scoreless in the game’s final four minutes.

2012 Big Ten Tournament Preview & Predictions

michigan-state-girl

The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off Thursday, March 8, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Heading into the tournament, the Big Ten continues to lead all conferences in the RPI and Sagarin ratings and is the only conference in the country with five top-15 teams.

So you could easily say it’s the toughest conference in college basketball. But it doesn’t mean the games will be the prettiest; in fact you might see a couple ugly ones.
