London Calling: flailing Oakland Raiders face a must-win already

Dennis Allen

After appearing to send the Patriots to overtime while on the road with a game-tying touchdown, the play was called back for holding. The next play was what any Raiders game-ending interception would be like- bobbled off of their own receivers’ hands and into the mitts of a 325 pound defensive tackle.

After Charles Woodson noted that his new team “sucks” after losing to the Texans, he probably couldn’t muster any change on those emotions after their defense held Tom Brady in check all day. It’s a little early for Woodson to panic, but maybe London Fletcher was on to something before the season started when he called out Woodson for going to Oakland to receive one last pay day. Buffalo Bills: this defense is for real

Jerry Hughes

The Bills look good. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s only two weeks into the season, but the Buffalo Bills sit atop the AFC East as one of only five teams who are 2-0 heading into a Monday night showdown between the Colts and Eagles.

On a day where Bills fans were not only able to celebrate the tremendous strength of Jim Kelly and the fact that they’ll remain in Buffalo under new ownership, the Bills came out and beat up on their divisional rival, the Miami Dolphins.

What is the Chicago Bears Biggest Need?

Needs

It seems like such a simple question, but no one can provide a definitive answer.

In free agency, the Bears did quite a bit in terms of addressing some of their most glaring needs. The offensive tackle, tight end, and linebacker positions were all upgraded.

But with the NFL Draft less than a week away, predictions are still all over the board for who the Bears may take with the 20th selection.

In my opinion, this is a two-horse race: offensive lineman, or linebacker. Apparently, most draft experts don’t agree with me.

Chicago Bears Free Agency Analysis and Predictions

NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New York Giants

Well, that escalated quickly.

GM Phil Emery followed up his amazing opening act last season with an equally impressive performance in the first few hours of this year’s free agency period.

About 60 minutes after the opening bell, former Giants tight end Martellus Bennett was watching the ink dry on his new four-year deal with the Bears. The terms of Bennett’s contract have not yet been disclosed.

A few hours later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed that former Saints Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod would be joining Bennett in the Windy City on a five-year, $36 million deal, making him the highest paid offensive lineman in team history. [Read more…]

Lauren Tannehill, Dolphins QB wife, promoting restaurant

lauren-tannehill

Duffy’s Sports Grill, a South Florida sports themed restaurant chain, has a partnership with Lauren Tannehill, wife of Miami Dolphins’ starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. This alliance marks the first time Lauren Tannehill has ever partnered with a restaurant brand.

The couple was welcomed to South Florida earlier this year when Ryan was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.  Having been featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” Lauren Tannehill quickly became Miami’s newest sweetheart.

What’s the 2nd biggest problem the Chicago Bears have?

Bears O Line

It’s no secret at this point. The most glaring need that the Chicago Bears need to address this offseason is their offensive line.

You can copy and paste the 2 sentences above into a description of the Bears heading into last offseason. And in 2010… And in 2009…

You get my point.

Unfortunately for Jay Cutler, he had to get dragged to the turf 148 times over the past 4 seasons for anybody with the appropriate power to notice.

I have full confidence in GM Phil Emery that he will shore up the offensive line in some fashion in the coming months. It may be through the draft, it may be through free agency. Hell, it may be through both seeing how many holes there are to plug up front.

But if there’s one thing Emery has shown to the fans since he’s been here, it’s that if there is a need, it will be addressed promptly and properly.

Wide receiver problems? Let’s steal Brandon Marshall from the Dolphins. Need an offensive minded head coach? Let’s bring in upwards of a dozen guys, mostly noted offensive geniuses, and have a replacement picked within 3 weeks of the season ending. Welcome to Chicago, Marc Trestman.

The man gets the job done, especially when it comes to fixing a top priority.

With news breaking early Wednesday morning that the Bears have chosen Trestman, expect other coaching voids to be filled in a domino effect. We’ve already seen former Cowboys Special Teams Coordinator named to the same position for the Bears, who recently lost Dave Toub to the Kansas City Chiefs. Early indications have Rod Marinelli remaining as the Defensive Coordinator, and Saints interim coach Aaron Kromer has been tabbed as the Offensive Coordinator.

When the dust settles, expect Emery to work very closely with Trestman and his staff to start constructing a plan to enhance the offensive line.

But hidden beneath the obvious needs, what other areas on the roster does the front office need to improve this offseason?

Indianapolis Colts are surprise playoff threats, as are opposing Miami Dolphins

If the NFL playoffs were to start next week, today’s 1 p.m. matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins, both 4-3, would decide a wild-card spot.

The two franchises were a combined 8-24 in 2011.

But their surprising presences in the postseason conversation — albeit in a weakened AFC — go to show that the nature of the NFL game (and impressive rookie quarterbacks) allow for such turnarounds if a team has underrated talent elsewhere on its roster.

That is the case with these two clubs, who according to NFL.com will participate in the first-ever meeting between two top-10 draft-pick quarterbacks with winning records at this point in their rookie seasons.

Indianapolis Colts open Andrew Luck era against Chicago Bears

Finally.

After such an incredibly turbulent offseason, perhaps the most turbulent one since infamously moving to Indianapolis in 1984, the Indianapolis Colts finally have a real football game to play today, the first one coached by Chuck Pagano and quarterbacked by Andrew Luck.

A new era. A fresh start.

We certainly won’t learn everything about this majorly overhauled roster after its contest with the Chicago Bears at 1 p.m. at Soldier Field. From what we saw during training camp and preseason action, though, can give us a good idea of what areas to watch specifically as the Colts truly enter a brave new post-Peyton Manning world.

Lauren Tannehill’s husband Ryan named Miami Dolphins starting QB

lauren-tannehill

The Miami Dolphins named rookie and first round draft pick Ryan Tannehill their starting quarterback today. That’s an important piece of NFL news right there. But if you run a sports website, you know Tannehill as Mr. Lauren Tannehill. On the internet, the wife formerly known as Lauren Ufer is more famous than the husband.

Miami Dolphins 2012 Fantasy Football Preview

Fantasy Football and the Miami Dolphins actually don’t make a very good mix. In 2011, the team put up only 20.6 points per game (20th in the NFL) and had a tough time finding out who their play-makers were. With a key piece gone (WR Brandon Marshall), new coach (Joe Philbin) and a quarterback controversy (Matt Moore, David Garrard and Ryan Tannehill), the fantasy outlook for this team is really up in the air for 2012.

Here are the guys in Miami that you should have on your list come time to do the fantasy draft.
