manchester united

Manchester United supporters have become accustomed to the annual defensive injury crisis in recent seasons, with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and the da Silva brothers each on the sidelines for long periods. This season’s incarnation – hardly a surprise to anybody perusing the injury records of Sir Alex Ferguson’s defenders – has come a little earlier than normal, with the Scot’s first choice back-four absent for Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday night.

What Can Manchester United Expect From Michael Owen this Season?

Manchester United’s Michael Owen is known as one of the best strikers of his generation. In 1998, he became England’s youngest player and goalscorer at the time. The 1998 World Cup made him a household name and he’s the only player in history to ever have scored in four major tournaments for England. In international play, he is England’s seventh most-capped player and has scored a national record of 26 competitive goals, with 40 in total from 89 appearances, most recently in 2008.

Owen’s long injury absence after the 2006 World Cup resulted in a dispute between FIFA and The FA and Newcastle United, and eventually resulted in an unprecedented £10m compensation award to Newcastle, and brought changes to the compensation arrangements between club and country regarding injuries sustained by contracted club players while on international duty.

He was signed to Manchester United in 2009 to a two year deal. At the beginning of last month, he re-upped with the Old Trafford club for another year [Read more…]

The Old Trafford outfit absolutely destroyed the Seattle Sounders, 7-0 in their last preseason friendly. Therefore, conventional wisdom held that this match could see more of the same.

However, this friendly held in 90 degree heat and ugly humidity at Soldier Field, turned out quite different.

The scoring began in the first half when Chicago’s Cory Gibbs’ header found the back of the net. Coincidentally, Gibbs was the lone Fire player selected for the pre-game media conference Thursday.

“We’re excited for this opportunity, halfway through our season,” he told the press Thursday.

Gibbs certainly made the most of his opp.

As the world famous Manchester United F.C. arrived in Chicago for an international friendly soccer match, they realized that they’re not just battling the MLS Chicago Fire, but also Chicago’s oppressive heat.

“We came from a nice cool atmosphere in Seattle to a furnace, so it’ll be a test for the players- both sides,” said Sir Alex Ferguson during Thursday’s media conference.

Thursday’s high temperature in Seattle was 63; in Chicago 99 officially, with numerous portions of the city recording Chicago’s first triple digit readings since 2005. Heat indexes are running in the 110s-120s and Saturday doesn’t look much better with a forecast calling for 95 degrees, with more oppressive humidity. The combination will make exercising outside for non-professional athletes extremely dangerous.
