Don’t think Louisville vs. Kentucky is a hard-core rivalry? Check out the Final Four smack-talking t-shirts after the jump. This is NASTY. Brutal, like Duke vs. North Carolina.

UPDATED 2013-2014 preseason top 25 college basketball rankings

With the Louisville Cardinals cutting down the nets, the book was officially closed on the 2012-2013 college basketball season.  Hoop junkies like myself are already looking ahead to next season so allow me to present to you my updated way too early 2012-2013 preseason Top 25 college basketball rankings.

So here is my preliminary preseason Top 25 college basketball rankings for next season.  I have updated these rankings since the NBA Draft early entries list is complete and a number of transfers have since been announced.  There is still one major x-factor out there, the undecided Andrew Wiggins who is the #1 prospect in the 2013 class.  Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here to see how my 2012-13 way too early preseason college basketball rankings turned out.)

Kentucky Wildcats 2013 recruiting class will face enormous expectations

With six McDonald’s All-Americans on their way to Lexington, it is pretty obvious as to why the Kentucky Wildcats have the number one recruiting class in 2013.  In fact, you can make an argument that the group of Julius Randle, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Dakari Johnson, James Young, and Marcus Lee might be the best recruiting class of all time.  Wherever they rank on that list, one thing is for certain; this freshmen class will face an incredible amount of pressure with such high expectations placed upon this group.

#3 Kentucky Wildcats: College Basketball 111 in 111

uk national title

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The Kentucky Wildcats survived a nail biter Friday evening in their season opener versus Maryland.  Once again John Calipari crushed it on the recruiting trail bringing in a talented freshman class to hopefully replace the five players from last year’s National Championship team that were selected in the NBA Draft.  UK has a huge test tonight against an experience Duke squad.

#61 Kentucky Wildcats: College Football 77 in 77

ashley_judd_UK

With a coach’s name like Joker Phillips, you know the Kentucky Wildcats are going to have a ton of players on the all name team (my favorite feature of the 77 in 77) and they don’t disappoint with DTs Mister Cobble and Donte Rumph. Both of which also star players. All of UK’s talent is on defense, for the most part. As their offense was EXTREMELY ATROCIOUS last season.

Remember this is a college basketball hotbed in a college football land. You won’t see 6 draft picks in the first two rounds like you did in hoops.By the way, have I ever mentioned just how unfortunate looking Anthony Davis really is?

Kentucky’s Anthony Davis ready to join New Orleans Hornets

anthony davis

A couple years ago, Anthony Davis was a lightly recruited guard at Charter Perspectives High School in Chicago, Ill. Then he grew over half a foot, and became a big man prospect with guard skills. The rare combination of attributes led to his shooting up the recruiting rankings. He became a McDonald’s All-American, won all the national college basketball individual awards, and led the Kentucky Wildcats to a national championship in his one-and-done season.

Now the unibrowed one is set become the #1 overall pick by the NBA owned New Orleans Hornets.

The Sports Bank’s Ngozi Ekeledo stopped by the 2012 NBA Draft Combine’s Media Day and talked to the most-likely top draft pick about handling the media pressure and his familiarity with the city of New Orleans.

Doron Lamb: stepping out of Kentucky shadows into NBA Draft

doron lamb goggles

The top six players off the Kentucky Wildcats National Championship winning team will be among those taken in the 2012 NBA Draft.  That includes the sharpshooting Doron Lamb.  While he won’t hear his name called early in the lottery like former teammates Anthony Davis or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, or even in the mid-first round like Terrence Jones or Marquis Teague; Lamb is confident he can be a solid contributor at the next level.

ucla hoops

Here is an updated on my preseason Top 25 for the 2012-2013 college basketball.  With transfers, the decisions of some previously undeclared top high school recruits, and players declaring their intentions to return to school or leave for the NBA Draft, there has been a lot of movement since I released my original rankings the day after the National Championship game.  (Click here for a list of NBA Draft early entries.) Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here for my way too early preseason rankings from last season.)
