Big Ten football power rankings: lipstick on a pig edition

big-ten-football-colbert

During Big Ten football Saturdays like this, how do you spin what happened? How do you put lipstick on these pigs? And even though Northwestern out-gained an AWFUL Western Michigan team by just 126 yards, they’ve still earned the second slot.

You can argue that a different Big Ten football team deserves to be there. But my argument is pretty solid for NU. Also, Illinois gave up 615 yards and lost “at home,” and yet they move UP not down this week.

Indiana Hoosiers #1 seed overall- still deserving?

indiana-hoosiers-#1-seed

Despite the loss last night, you’ll still hear Indiana Hoosiers #1 seed on Selection Sunday. It would take a major collapse by IU to prevent that from happening. However, should we see Indiana Hoosiers #1 seed overall this March madness? Future NBA PF Trevor Mbakwe had 21 and 12 to help the Gophers topple an Indiana Hoosiers #1 team last night, the seventh time the AP poll’s top team has lost a game this season.

Cody Zeller and the Hoosiers were beat up on the glass 44-30 last night, but the Big Ten leaders still look like national leaders. The Hoosiers (24-4, 12-3), have held the No. 1 ranking for 10 of 17 polls this season including the past four.  Who else is there to take their place, Gonzaga? Duke? Miami? the Wolverines? On a side note, who else other than the Illini have beaten both the polls’ #1 team Hoosiers and the #2 team Gonzaga this season? But we’re not here to discuss Illinois’ resume, we’re here to think about the #1 overall seed when the brackets are filled out.

Hoosiers Cody Zeller is apparently a hydroelectric engineer, on Twitter

The #3 Indiana Hoosiers defeated the #1 Michigan Wolverines 81-73 as Cody Zeller scored 19 points.

It’s the third time in school history that the Hoosiers (19-2, 8-1 Big Ten) have beaten the No. 1 team at home, and the first time they’ve done it in back-to-back seasons. The win gives Indiana a five-game winning streak, sole possession of the Big Ten lead and likely the top spot in the country again when Monday’s rankings come out. But was this worth storming the court? How can IU fans storm the court after a game in which they were favored.

In addition to Michigan’s defeat, No. 2 Kansas lost 85-80 to Oklahoma State.  But let’s get back to Zeller and his Twitter account.

Indiana Hoosiers Cody Zeller becoming a rock star

cody zeller iu

The Indiana Hoosiers Cody Zeller could end up achieving the same trifecta as Anthony Davis at Kentucky did last year. The Wildcats big man from Chicago won a national title, took home the college basketball player of the year award, and became the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Zeller may do the same this year. For those who do some online betting, the Hoosiers are the favorite, topping all the preseason polls. And Zeller looks like #1 material in many NBA mock drafts. This is why Zeller is getting so much pub; gracing the cover of ESPN the magazine for their college basketball season preview. He’s not nicknamed “the big handsome” for nothing.

Indiana Hoosiers, Cody Zeller lead strong Big Ten basketball outlook

cody-zeller

The Big Ten has been pretty weak in college football this season. That’s obvious. But as down as football might be, Big Ten college basketball is up just as much, perhaps even more. The league has three of the top five in the coaches poll, and five teams in the top 25. The Hoosiers are number one in the poll, with the Buckeyes number four and the Wolverines number five.

Today was the conference’s media day, held right here in Chicago. And here’s who the media picked for to finish at the top of the league, and to make the all-Big Ten team.

Indiana Hoosiers have another strong class, led by Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell

kevin-ferrell

The Indiana Hoosiers could be the preseason #1 next year. If instant impact freshman Cody Zeller and hero of the Kentucky game Christian Watford return, and former star wing Maurice Creek is the same player he was before injury, IU is going to be a juggernaut.

They have a very solid core returning, and  the 3rd rated recruiting class coming in. The Hoosiers have five solid incoming freshmen, one at each position, with Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell leading the way.

Yogi, in Chicago for the McDonald’s All-American game, is the headliner of this class.

Video: Kentucky Wildcats “300” movie spoof, revenge vs. IU Hoosiers

anthony davis

The top overall seed Kentucky Wildcats lost to the Indiana Hoosiers earlier this year on an iconic Christian Watford three pointer, but this video says they won’t let it happen again. We’ll see tomorrow night.

Check out this “300” movie spoof featuring Anthony Davis as King Leonidas telling (Davis is much more articulate here than in real life) the Hoosiers that he is out for revenge for the previous loss. At Coach Cal’s command, Davis finishes off Watford and the Hoosiers to avenge the first game.

Ashley Judd also makes an appearance in this clip, because ”This is UK!” She has to.

2012 Big Ten Tournament Preview & Predictions

michigan-state-girl

The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off Thursday, March 8, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Heading into the tournament, the Big Ten continues to lead all conferences in the RPI and Sagarin ratings and is the only conference in the country with five top-15 teams.

So you could easily say it’s the toughest conference in college basketball. But it doesn’t mean the games will be the prettiest; in fact you might see a couple ugly ones.

Hoosiers Cody Zeller is Superior to Illini Meyers Leonard

cody-zeller

In the Big Ten, there are two centers 0f attention that have separated themselves from the pack. And that makes sense as there are just fewer and fewer true centers these days; especially at the NBA level. And where would the NBA get such beings? When college basketball is seeing the decline of the big man too.

The two main big men in the Big Ten are Cody Zeller at Indiana, and Meyers Leonard at Illinois. And as we saw Thursday night in the way the Hoosiers handled the Illini, (not to mention the individual matchup) you can see which one is the highly rated recruit, and which one is the McDonald’s All-American.

Illini Coach Bruce Weber gave a very candid description of Leonard, and described what Zeller has, Leonard lacks.

Hoosiers’ rivalry with Illinois moving more towards Indiana’s Favor

illinois-indiana-rivalry

Overshadowed this week by UNC-Duke, the best rivalry in college basketball and Syracuse-Georgetown, the greatest in the Big East, is Illini vs. Hoosiers, a great rivalry in itself.

The all time series was tied at 83 entering tonight. However, Illinois was 5-1 in their last 6 versus IU. And that one loss in Bloomington last year was extremely fluky to say the least. After tonight, with Indiana winning 84-71, you can see the rivalry going more the way of #23 Indiana.

“Indiana just kicked our butts tonight,” said Illini guard D.J. Richardson who led the Illini with 19 points.

The Illini haven’t beaten a ranked team on the road since 2010.
