The ‘David Kahn’ Era

David Kahn

When Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor named David Kahn the president of basketball operations, he expected to have a playoff-contending team by now. Instead, in his four years on the job he has made more trades than times Dwight Howard has changed his mind about being traded, drafted more point guards than an apartment complex could support, and traded away more draft picks than Jarrod Saltalamacchia has letters in his last name. And now, the T’wolves are in another transition of which I am about to get to.  [Read more…]

Minnesota Timberwolves “luck” might be turning around?

Minnesota Timberwolves

I know the last few years have been down-right dreadful for fans of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Our last few draft picks (Wes Johnson and Derrick Williams) haven’t panned-out, so far or yet. But, Ricky Rubio brought a spark this season before his ACL injury. He lit-up Target Center with his maestro passing skills and non-matador-esque defensive ability that most of his teammates (Michael Beasley) have shown the past few years. He might just be the beginning of a Minnesota-turnaround, though.

Ricky Rubio Will Be a NBA Bust

ricky rubio timberwolves

Not much has gone right for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the last twenty plus years.

They had a brief flirtation with success during the Flip Saunders and Kevin Garnett years, but the well has been almost completely dry otherwise. The frustration was palpable this spring when general manager David Kahn went over the edge expressing his concerns with the NBA lottery.

The Cleveland Cavaliers garnered the top pick this season and Kahn insinuated that the result was due to anything but the randomness of the ping pong balls. The team will presumably pick up forward Derrick Williams from the Arizona Wildcats after the Cavaliers take Kyrie Irving from Duke. This is not horrible news because the experts do believe that the two at the top of the draft have a large separation from the rest of the field.

Minnesota Timberwolves’ Options at Number Two: They Keep It

While the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks lit up the scoreboard Thursday night in game five of the NBA Finals. This Timberwolves fan couldn’t help but analyze the Wolves options with the number two pick in the upcoming June 23rd draft.

President and general manager David Kahn will have plenty of options with the aforementioned pick come draft night. Kahn having options may be a worse idea than Representative Anthony Weiner having facebook sex chats with a Las Vegas 40-year old blackjack dealer. (Ok, it may have been forced, but I was due for a Weiner joke.)

With a variety of options present for Kahn and company, I decided to break down their options in two parts. So here is part one of the Wolves options with the number two overall pick: They hold onto it.

Ricky Rubio Joins the Timberwolves; Early Favorite for Rookie of the Year?

After what might be the longest negotiation in the history of professional sports, Ricky Rubio has finally agreed to be a part of the NBA team that drafted him. 706 days after David Kahn and the Minnesota Timberwolves selected Rubio with the 5th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, it appears the two parties have agreed to join forces for the 2011-12 season and beyond.

The Deeply Beleaguered Minnesota Sports Fan

Tubby Smith Minnesota

Sports fan in Minnesota haven’t had a whole lot to cheer about recently. The general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, David Kahn, received some flack recently for simply stating the obvious. The NBA lottery is a flawed system that annually does not give the team the position it deserves in the draft.

He insinuated that the good story of the year obtains the pick.

Once again, the club fell victim to the ping pong balls. It doesn’t seem to be a year that it will be of great impact because there are two players that are head and shoulders above the rest: Derrick Williams of the Arizona Wildcats, and Kyrie Irving of Duke.

Timberwolves GM David Kahn Implies Lottery was Fixed for Cavs

David Kahn Ricky Rubio

As you know by now, the Cleveland Cavaliers won the first overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery last night, meaning the Minnesota Timberwolves will pick second. This immediately prompted rumors that the T’Wolves are looking to deal their #2 overall draft choice.

Unfortunately for Minnesota fans, it also means general manager David Kahn is in charge of making the deal.

Kahn has been one of our favorite re-occurring targets over years. (Linking to all of our critical articles would take too long; but here’s one, and here’s another). And last night Kahn said he knew Minnesota was “dead” when it got down to the final three remaining in the top three spots: himself, Utah’s Kevin O’Connor and Cleveland’s Nick Gilbert.

Minnesota Timberwolves Season Review Part 1: What Went Wrong?

The 2010-11 Minnesota Timberwolves season was a struggle. But what went wrong?

In a word, everything, but that would be too easy.

Kevin Love’s 53 game double-double streak overshadowed what was a season full of over blown expectations and vast under achievement.

VOTE NOW! The Sports Bank Anti-Bracket Ty Cobb Regional Finals

The Ty Cobb Regional featured some stiff competition among losers. Brett Favre, Kurt Rambis, Harvey Updyke, Charlie Sheen and David Kahn highlighted the regional’s biggest failures. Much like the NCAA Tournament, the first two rounds featured some epic upsets and some orgasmic finales that would have made Gus Johnson keel over into a giant puddle of awesome-sauce.

The Final Straw; Minnesota Needs to Show David Kahn the Door

Minnesota Timberwolves President David Kahn

Some people only get so many chances to prove that they’re incompetent. Others get to prove they suck at their jobs daily. Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations David Kahn appears to be in the latter. That trend needs to end now.

For anyone who has discussed the Minnesota Timberwolves with me for more than two seconds over the past 20 months, you knew this was coming.
