Ugly basketball dooms but doesn’t define the Wisconsin Badgers

Ben Brust, Jared Berggren

Wisconsin’s worst of fears were confirmed on Friday afternoon when Ole Miss pulled the cliche-but-common 12/5 upset in a dramatic 57-46 win over the Badgers.

The Badgers uncharacteristically lost the turnover battle, 11-to-9, and shot an atrocious 25.4 percent from the field.

Many felt Ole Miss was a borderline tournament team and the most publicized player in this year’s Big Dance has unfortunately been the polarizing Marshall Henderson who willed himself to be the top-scorer with the an inefficient 19 points on 6-of-21 shooting.

Considering the way the Badgers performed, it’s not farfetched to say it was the worst tournament loss of the Bo Ryan era, but one dark day shouldn’t define what Wisconsin did in 2012-13. [Read more…]

Wisconsin Badgers knock off top-seeded Indiana and improve resume in the process

Bo Ryan B1G Ten Tourney

Wisconsin Badgers forward Ryan Evans had the game of his life while leading the Badgers with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks in a 68-57 win over the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers.

The Badgers had an underwhelming end to the regular season with a home loss to Purdue and a needed buzzer-beater to fend off lowly Penn State. Yet, they’ve taken the United Center by storm and are one win away from winning the Big Ten Tournament in a year the conference reigns over the college basketball world.

After beating Indiana for the 12th straight time and holding the Hoosiers to a season-low 56 points, Wisconsin’s head coach Bo Ryan said it best:

“There are just things in this game where no matter how you try to explain them, they defy explanation or reason.” [Read more…]

Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan should be the 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year

Bo Ryan 2013 Coach of the Year

At the end of a tough non-conference schedule, pundits and fans alike speculated that there was no way Bo Ryan could take a Wisconsin Badgers team without their starting point guard and contend for a Big Ten Title.

The Badgers were throttled at Florida (74-56 loss), picked apart by Creighton (84-74 loss), shocked by Virginia at home (60-54) and embarrassed by in-state rival Marquette (60-50 loss).

Not exactly the ideal way to go in to play in the best conference in America.

And now at the conclusion of their Big Ten slate and a 12-6 conference record, we’ve learned what everyone should have already known.

NEVER DOUBT BO who should be the Big Ten’s 2013 Coach of the Year. [Read more…]

#26 Wisconsin Badgers: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

My normal rule is never under any circumstances predict a Bo Ryan-led Wisconsin Badgers team outside of the Top 25 in my preseason rankings.  However, the devastating torn ACL injury suffered by Josh Gasser in the preseason is a massive loss that has me going against my usual instincts.

Believe it or not, Bo Ryan has made unbelievable progress at Wisconsin

After a disheartening last second loss to the Syracuse Orange in the Sweet 16, critics quickly came out of the woodwork to bash Wisconsin Badgers Head Coach Bo Ryan while an elect few went as far to call for his job.

As I sat back and watched these events unfold, I couldn’t happen but get sick to my stomach.

Have they already forgotten what Ryan has done for the UW program or are they simply taking it for granted?

By my calculations, Ryan should be able to coach the Badgers for as long as his heart desires and here’s why. [Read more…]

#1 Syracuse vs. #4 Wisconsin: everything you need to know

Jordan Taylor Ben Brust

For the first time in program history, the Wisconsin Badgers are making back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances.  In typical fashion, most critics were underestimating UW’s chances of advancing past the first weekend but Bo Ryan has done it again.  The Badgers will match up with top seed Syracuse Thursday night in an East Regional game in Boston.  Many were hopping off the Orange bandwagon after Fab Melo was suspended for the NCAA Tournament, but ‘Cuse avoided upset bids in the opening weekend to keep their dancing shoes shined.

Everything you need to know about #4 Wisconsin vs. #13 Montana

For the third consecutive year, the Big Ten’s Wisconsin Badgers have drawn a four seed in the NCAA Tournament. This year, they match-up with a Montana Grizzlies team who hail from the Big Sky Conference and have won fourteen straight games.

Even though the Badgers (24-9) are 3-0 all-time against #13 seeds and appear to be heavy favorites, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the Grizzlies (25-6).

Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers stay perfect in Senior Day Games (Rapid Reaction)

With a 70-56 win over the Fighting Illini, the Wisconsin Badgers’ Head Coach Bo Ryan is now 11-0 in Senior Day games at the Kohl Center.

Seniors Jordan Taylor and Rob Wilson were magnificent with 24 combined points to help the Badgers (23-8, 12-6) end the regular season on a three-game winning streak.

After losing eight of their last nine games, Illinois (17-14, 6-12) would have to pull out a miracle and win the Big Ten Tournament if they want to make the NCAA Tournament.

Mystery Big Ten Coach claims Bo Ryan and the Badgers ‘cheat the game’

In a recent online article from Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated, a Big Ten coach or assistant anonymously claimed that the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team “cheats the game.”

Prior to the juicy details of the article, which attempts to exploit the weaknesses of the power conference’s best teams, Davis warns that some entries may be overly negative or critical.

In the Badgers case, I think it’s safe to say their passage falls somewhere in that overly negative category.

Is it possible that some of these claims are true or does it stem from the frustration the Badgers bring on opponents when playing their hard-nosed style of basketball? [Read more…]

Wisconsin Badgers pick up signature win at Ohio State (Rapid Reaction)

After 29 games, the Wisconsin Badgers have finally picked up that signature win they were looking for.

Better late than never as Jordan Taylor and Jared Berggren’s combined 37 points helped the Badgers upset the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 63-60.

With the loss, the Michigan State Spartans clinch at least a share of the Big Ten Title and Ohio State’s (23-6, 11-5) chances at a number one seed are now dashed. Meanwhile, the Badgers (21-8, 10-6) have most certainly enhanced their resume for the big dance.

“We’ve played two very good teams. Today, we needed to have the ability to sustain what we had going, which we didn’t do. We didn’t get the execution or the defensive stops that we needed,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of the loss.

Wisconsin Badgers still in the hunt for a Big Ten Title

A Bo Ryan-led Wisconsin Badgers squad will rarely impress you with pure talent, but that doesn’t mean they can’t win. The Badgers run one of the least sexy offenses in the country and play such fundamental defense that they almost lull opposing teams to sleep.

This season has been no different with the #22 Badgers checking in at 19-6 and 8-4 in the Big Ten Conference, just a game and a half back of the #3 Ohio State Buckeyes (21-3, 9-2).

One difference that has popped up this season is the Badgers solid play on the road. Did you know the Badgers have lost more games at home than on the road? With an overtime win against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Wisconsin improved to 6-2 away from the Kohl Center.

With three of the next four games on the road, the Badgers hopes for a Big Ten Title will ride on continuing to compete outside the state-lines. [Read more…]
