Michigan State Rose Bowl flashback and history

Michigan-State-1988

With Michigan State’s victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game, the Spartans clinched a berth in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1988; a game MSU won 20-17 over USC. For the Big Ten, it meant only it’s third Rose Bowl victory in the last 15 years; going 2-12 from 1974 to 1987.

The years that followed, however, the Big Ten experienced a great amount of success from 1989-2000 going 8-4 over the Pac-10 (now 12) in the Rose Bowl.

Now the Big Ten, not just Michigan State, is praying for history to repeat itself.

Brady Hoke: how warm is his seat getting?

brady_hoke

With Michigan’s recent loss to Iowa, there have been talks about Brady Hoke and others on his staff being on the hot seat. A 7-4 record is not where Michigan was expected to be going into the Ohio State game, but 7-4 is no reason to make any rash decisions.

More people are calling for the head of Al Borges than they are for the scalp of Brady Hoke. But that doesn’t mean Brady Hoke isn’t feeling intense heat right now.

Big Ten Week 1 Review: Purdue is terrible, PSU finds a QB, Nebraska D = AWFUL

big-ten

Every Big Ten team has a game in the books now. Here’s what we learned.

We knew Purdue and new coach Darrell Hazell had work to do coming into the 2013 season but— wow. Rob Henry and the Boilermaker offense had nothing, and their defense had even less, in their 42-7 loss to Cincinnati.

Michigan Wolverines suspend safety Thomas Gordon

Two short seasons after starting his Michigan Wolverines career on one of the nation’s worst defenses, Thomas Gordon, with the help of Brady Hoke, enters his senior season as an anchor on one of the nation’s best defensive units.

New era of Michigan-Ohio State Domination?

michigan-ohio-state

Michigan-Ohio State has always been “The Game.” OSU and UM have always been the big boys of the Big Ten. But are we approaching a new era of extremely clear-cut domination on the college football gridiron between the Wolverines and Buckeyes?

Big Ten Football Season in Review

At the beginning of the season we gave a quarterly review of the performance of each Big Ten team and graded them based on how they did compared to pre-season expectations. As the season progressed, so did the quarterly reviews. About a month ago, we gave our third quarter review. Now, with the regular season over, we conclude the series with our season in review.  Each school’s grade is based on its overall / conference record, and how the team improved or declined throughout the season based on their expectations.

Does Wisconsin Stand a Chance vs. Stanford?

With Wisconsin’s Big Ten Championship win over Nebraska, the loser to Stanford in the Rose Bowl has been determined. Okay, just a small joke touching on the weakness of the Big Ten conference this season, but, does Wisconsin stand a chance against Stanford in Pasadena on January 1st? If they play like the team that just completely obliterated Nebraska 70-31, you bet!

Going into yesterday night, I would have told you Wisconsin would lose something like…24-17. I was not convinced Nebraska was as good as their 10-2 record indicated, but I fully thought the Huskers would smell the Roses after yesterday night. However, Wisconsin looked like anything but a team that went 7-5 in the regular season and finished third in the leaders division.

Stanford has a tendency of shutting down good offenses. Such as holding Oregon to only 14 points, along with then no.2 ranked Southern Cal when the Cardinal beat them in week three 21-14. Wisconsin’s one-dimensional offense will have a hard time with the tough Stanford defense.

The 11-2 Cardinal is the toughest opponent Wisconsin will play this season, and if Wisconsin does not want to make their third straight Rose Bowl appearance a third straight loss, they have to develop a passing game. I would not anticipate Stanford letting Bucky get away with only passing the ball 8 times in a game, but after what we saw yesterday, who really knows? If Wisconsin is as unstoppable on the ground in four weeks as they were yesterday, they won’t need a passing game.

I was ready to crown Stanford Rose Bowl Champs regardless of which team won yesterday. However, with Wisconsin’s outstanding performance over the Huskers yesterday, I have a new found hope that if a similar looking Badger team shows up in Pasadena, it could be the right recipe for a Big Ten, Pac 12 Rose Bowl classic!

12-0 Ohio State Buckeyes could finish with AP National Title

urban-meyer

Despite Ohio State’s post-season ban, the Buckeyes played the season like a team with a National Championship on the line. Every week Urban Meyer had his guys ready to play, and every week, his players came away with a victory.

Very rarely does a team play up to their full potential when they have, seemingly, nothing to play for. There was no Big Ten or National Championship waiting for the Buckeyes at the end of the season, but they strapped up every week and gave it their all.

Is Indiana Football A Conference Champion Contender?

Indiana Quarterback Nate Sudfeld

Every time Wisconsin has the opportunity to pull away from what’s left of the Leaders division, they find a way screw it up and let the rest of them hang around. This week, it’s Indiana. You may say I’m absurd, but the Hoosiers are in control of their own destiny on the road to Indianapolis for the chance to play in the conference championship game. Although Indiana has three conference losses this season, Wisconsin now has two. Moreover, the Hoosiers and Badgers still have a showdown a couple of weeks from now, which could help Indiana get the edge come season’s end.

Is Urban Meyer Good For The Big Ten?

urban-meyer

From the time  it was announced that Jim Tressel would be leaving Ohio State, one man had been on the minds of not just the Buckeye faithful, but all of the Big Ten:  Urban Meyer. Even as Luke Fickell took over the reins for Ohio State last season, the writing was on the wall that Fickell was there to serve as the buffer between the Tressel and Meyer eras.
