Big Ten football power rankings: lipstick on a pig edition

big-ten-football-colbert

During Big Ten football Saturdays like this, how do you spin what happened? How do you put lipstick on these pigs? And even though Northwestern out-gained an AWFUL Western Michigan team by just 126 yards, they’ve still earned the second slot.

You can argue that a different Big Ten football team deserves to be there. But my argument is pretty solid for NU. Also, Illinois gave up 615 yards and lost “at home,” and yet they move UP not down this week.

Mitch McGary, Glenn Robinson III returning to Michigan

With Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III coming back, just how good will the Wolverines be next year? Sure, they lost Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke to the NBA Draft. And that’s huge. But look how much they have coming back.

The #1 ranked power forward and #2 overall recruit in the nation (according to ESPNU) Mitch McGary picked the Michigan Wolverines, over the Duke Blue Devils or Florida Gators. Now he’s picking Ann Arbor over the NBA Draft. Maybe Michigan won’t be just a “college football school” any more?

Michigan Wolverines Trey Burke: top ten NBA Draft pick?

trey-burke

Trey Burke, sophomore point guard for the Michigan Wolverines was just named the Oscar Robertson national player of the year. And since only coaches and players care about these awards, we won’t expound on this any further. Articles/posts about awards are always web traffic killers.

Although it is interesting that this season has no clear-cut, defined #1 overall college basketball player. Trey Burke has exceeded expectations in Ann Arbor and brought the Wolverines to the Final Four this weekend. The Columbus, Ohio native and Big Ten Player of the Year led the Wolverines (30-7) to a 16-0 start, a number one national ranking (Jan. 28) and the school’s first Final Four appearance since 1993.

College basketball is AWFUL in all of Illinois, yet again

depaul blue demon

What a shame. What a crying shame that Chicago, which every year has some of the best preps talent in the country, has zero going for it on the college level. Unless the Illinois Fighting Illini can somehow go 6-3 down stretch (and they face some brutal opponents so this highly unlikely) what Land of Lincoln team will get into the big dance? An improved UIC team that is 9-2 at home and 5-5 on conference could very possibly win the Horizon League Tournament, the only way they get their ticket punched. So maybe zero teams in the NCAAs this year, just like last year, just like four years ago. Juxtapose that with Indiana in 2000, when the Crossroads of America got seven teams in the big dance.

Hoosiers Cody Zeller is apparently a hydroelectric engineer, on Twitter

cody zeller iu

The #3 Indiana Hoosiers defeated the #1 Michigan Wolverines 81-73 as Cody Zeller scored 19 points.

It’s the third time in school history that the Hoosiers (19-2, 8-1 Big Ten) have beaten the No. 1 team at home, and the first time they’ve done it in back-to-back seasons. The win gives Indiana a five-game winning streak, sole possession of the Big Ten lead and likely the top spot in the country again when Monday’s rankings come out. But was this worth storming the court? How can IU fans storm the court after a game in which they were favored.

In addition to Michigan’s defeat, No. 2 Kansas lost 85-80 to Oklahoma State.  But let’s get back to Zeller and his Twitter account.

Is The NCAA Basketball Champion in The Big Ten?

trey-Burke

If there is a time for the Big Ten to exert their dominance in basketball, this is it! The conference has just suffered another poor football season, has been hit by scandal, and its teams continue to lose bowl games (2-5 in bowls this season). It is time for Big Ten basketball to rise to new heights; it’s time for the Big Ten to produce a national champion.

BTN’s Tim Doyle: worst. sportscaster. EVER

tim-doyle

You listen to Tim McCarver, Skip Bayless, or even worse yet, Jemele Hill and it makes you wonder “how does this person have a job?” Not only they do have a broadcasting gig, but it’s one with a very large footprint. There is no justice in the world.

The Big Ten Network version of that is Tim Doyle. As a player at Northwestern, he seemed to always be around and accumulate stats despite possessing no discernible talent. He’s the exact same as an announcer. Doyle is like Dick Vitale, he RUINS every game he calls. He’s so bad that he makes CBS 2’s Ryan Baker look good by comparison. And that’s really hard to do because Baker pulls off the impossible combination of being both bland/boring and annoying/irritating at the same time.

2012 Big Ten/ACC Challenge Preview and Predictions

big ten/acc challenge

The twelve-game Big Ten/ACC Challenge tips off tonight with the top four ranked teams in the nation; Duke, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State all in action.  After losing the first ten challenges, the Big Ten looks for their fourth straight win in this battle of power conferences.  To be completely blunt; they should have zero problem doing so as the Big Ten has far more depth than the ACC.

#10 Michigan Wolverines: College Basketball 111 in 111

trey-burke

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

I think I’m one of the few people not drinking the Michigan Wolverines kool-aid this season.  Don’t get me wrong, they will be a very good team, I’m just not buying them as a preseason top five squad quite yet.

Ohio State tips off the college basketball season tonight on the deck of the USS Yorktown when they host Marquette.  It certainly says something about what Thad Matta has built the Buckeyes program into when they lost both Jared Sullinger and William Buford, yet are still a top five ranked team in the preseason polls.  As you can tell, I am not that high on OSU this year since they have some big shoes to fill.

Indiana Hoosiers Cody Zeller becoming a rock star

cody zeller iu

The Indiana Hoosiers Cody Zeller could end up achieving the same trifecta as Anthony Davis at Kentucky did last year. The Wildcats big man from Chicago won a national title, took home the college basketball player of the year award, and became the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Zeller may do the same this year. For those who do some online betting, the Hoosiers are the favorite, topping all the preseason polls. And Zeller looks like #1 material in many NBA mock drafts. This is why Zeller is getting so much pub; gracing the cover of ESPN the magazine for their college basketball season preview. He’s not nicknamed “the big handsome” for nothing.

With Trevor Mbakwe returning from a torn ACL, Tubby Smith boasts his most talented roster since arriving at Minnesota.  Now the question becomes whether or not the Gophers can pull it all together and live up to their preseason Top 25 ranking.
