Big Ten to stop playing FCS football teams

fcs football

Big Ten officials have agreed to stop scheduling FCS football teams (Football Championship Series) for nonconference college football games. The change is expected to take effect before the 2016 season with a number of FCS football games already scheduled through the 2014-15 seasons.

Alabama Wins Another Title: Crush Irish

alabama-football-uniforms-2013

Alabama football is good. There’s no way around it. No other way of saying it. Alabama is a good football team. Say what you want about Nick Saban and his demeanor as a head coach, but the guy has simply put together one of the best programs in college football history.

Their latest National Championship came against Notre Dame, 42-14, earning Bama and Saban their third title in four seasons.

Does Wisconsin Stand a Chance vs. Stanford?

With Wisconsin’s Big Ten Championship win over Nebraska, the loser to Stanford in the Rose Bowl has been determined. Okay, just a small joke touching on the weakness of the Big Ten conference this season, but, does Wisconsin stand a chance against Stanford in Pasadena on January 1st? If they play like the team that just completely obliterated Nebraska 70-31, you bet!

Going into yesterday night, I would have told you Wisconsin would lose something like…24-17. I was not convinced Nebraska was as good as their 10-2 record indicated, but I fully thought the Huskers would smell the Roses after yesterday night. However, Wisconsin looked like anything but a team that went 7-5 in the regular season and finished third in the leaders division.

Stanford has a tendency of shutting down good offenses. Such as holding Oregon to only 14 points, along with then no.2 ranked Southern Cal when the Cardinal beat them in week three 21-14. Wisconsin’s one-dimensional offense will have a hard time with the tough Stanford defense.

The 11-2 Cardinal is the toughest opponent Wisconsin will play this season, and if Wisconsin does not want to make their third straight Rose Bowl appearance a third straight loss, they have to develop a passing game. I would not anticipate Stanford letting Bucky get away with only passing the ball 8 times in a game, but after what we saw yesterday, who really knows? If Wisconsin is as unstoppable on the ground in four weeks as they were yesterday, they won’t need a passing game.

I was ready to crown Stanford Rose Bowl Champs regardless of which team won yesterday. However, with Wisconsin’s outstanding performance over the Huskers yesterday, I have a new found hope that if a similar looking Badger team shows up in Pasadena, it could be the right recipe for a Big Ten, Pac 12 Rose Bowl classic!

12-0 Ohio State Buckeyes could finish with AP National Title

urban-meyer

Despite Ohio State’s post-season ban, the Buckeyes played the season like a team with a National Championship on the line. Every week Urban Meyer had his guys ready to play, and every week, his players came away with a victory.

Very rarely does a team play up to their full potential when they have, seemingly, nothing to play for. There was no Big Ten or National Championship waiting for the Buckeyes at the end of the season, but they strapped up every week and gave it their all.

Is Northwestern for real?

You may say it’s too early to talk of such things and that I need to calm down after only one conference game in the books, but this could be a great year for the Wildcats!

Their 5-0 record may not have come against the best of opponents (Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Boston College, South Dakota, Indiana), but Northwestern has shown the ability to score, almost on demand. They have scored over 40 points in two games and scored 38 in another.

Was last season a fluke for Brady Hoke and Michigan?

brady_hoke

With Brady Hoke’s incredibly successful first season at Michigan, the question, now, is whether the Wolverines will continue on their road to success as a nationally prominent team or if they will slipup in 2012.

The answer to that question lies to a great extent in the hands of Denard Robinson. The Heisman candidate has, without question, the ability to lead the Wolverines to another double-digit-win season and BCS bowl berth. However, he does have a tendency to make careless throws that seem to hang in the air forever. This is, in large part, the reason for his 15 interceptions last season.

Dennis Erickson leaves Arizona State Disgraced, ASU Destroyed by Boise

Boise State University entered the Maaco Bowl against the Arizona State Sun Devils as the number seven team in the BCS rankings. Yet, they were left out of a BCS game once again this season after suffering an earlier loss to the TCU Horned Frogs.

Don’t worry; this is not another column about how flawed the system is. I will not lobby here for a playoff. I will outline why bowl coaches should never come into the contest in a lame duck situation. I understand why this takes place. It is impossible for a team to hire a coach after the regular season and have him take over with his entire staff prior to the postseason.

Realistic Expectations for the Golden Gophers

College basketball has something in common with high stakes poker. Both pastimes are a combination of skill and luck. Tubby Smith has been lacking in the latter since he began his tenure in Minneapolis. He has had to deal with health issues, an irrelevant football program, questionable decision-making by his players, and injuries. The one bright spot for fans and alumni is that he hasn’t forgotten the game since his more successful days with the most prominent program in the country: Kentucky.

New Kansas Coach: Charlie Weis and his pooch are back baby!!

charlie_weis

He is back. The pooch and his schematic advantage will once again be the top dog while trolling, or more accurately, standing on the sideline.

The Kansas University Jayhawks have tapped Charlie Weis as the man to replace Turner Gill and revitalize the football program in Lawrence.

Future Big 10 Expansion Candidates: Rutgers, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame

Big Ten Conference

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) met recently to discuss conference expansion.A statement was issued by the Big Ten office today. It was a rather dry statement; and it didn’t say a whole lot, so let’s quickly get through it and move on to the fun stuff.

In response to a number of recent media inquiries received by several Big Ten Presidents and Chancellors regarding the likelihood of further expansion by the Big Ten, the COP/C would like to reiterate that it will not be actively engaged in conference expansion at this time, or at any time in the foreseeable future, barring a significant shift in the current intercollegiate athletic landscape.
