Wisconsin stomps into a Big Ten Championshp birth with 62-14 win over Indiana

The rest of the Leaders Division will have to wait another year because the Wisconsin Badgers will be the Leaders’ representative in the Big Ten Championship for the second straight year after a 62-14 win against Indiana at Memorial Stadium.

Last season was the inaugural year for the Championship in Indianapolis, so make it 2-for-2 for the Badgers (7-3, 4-2).

It’s gotten to the point where the Hoosiers (4-6, 2-3) dread playing the Badgers as they’ve been outscored 204-41 in their last three games against Wisconsin. Not only that, but the Badgers racked up a school-record 566 rushing yards in the win.

Michigan State ends the Wisconsin Badgers’ 21-game home winning streak

With a thrilling 16-13 overtime win against Wisconsin, the Michigan State Spartans have proven that the Badgers can indeed be defeated at Camp Randall.

Wisconsin came into the game with the second longest active home-winning streak in the nation at 21 games, their last loss at home coming on October 17th of 2009.

The Badgers defense had quite possibly their best game of the season, but in the end they were on the field just way too much as the Spartans’ quarterback Andrew Maxwell led his team on a pair of late touchdown drives.

Badgers show off nation’s best running back tandem in win over Minnesota

Wisconsin Badgers running backs James White and Montee Ball are running away as the nation’s top running back tandem.

The duo combined to rush for 341 yards on 39 carries (8.74 average) and all five of Wisconsin’s (6-2, 3-1) touchdowns in a 38-13 win over Minnesota.

White not only dominated the normal running game, he debuted at quarterback in the Badgers wildcat formation known as the “Barge” package. Following the game, head coach Bret Bielema emphasized how “fun and exciting,” this year’s team is.

Wisconsin Badgers go all defensive in a 31-14 win over the Fighting Illini

Madison, Wisconsin was the setting for a prototypical Big Ten match-up on Saturday as the Wisconsin Badgers defensively outlasted the Illinois Fighting Illini by the score of 31-14.

A cold and balmy day set the stage for a game that was rather ugly with both teams combining to go 7-of-26 on third downs and each committing two turnovers.

But it was the Badgers (4-2, 1-1) who survive to see another day in what has become a very confusing race in the Big Ten’s Leaders Division.

Wisconsin Badgers underwhelm in win over Panthers (Rapid Reaction)

The Wisconsin Badgers season opener against the Northern Iowa Panthers didn’t go quite as planned, but they did pull out the 26-21 win. All things considered, the Panthers (0-1) had a legitimate shot to take the lead late in the fourth quarter until the Badgers (1-0) defense buckled down and saved the game.

Last season, former quarterback Russell Wilson and offensive coordinator Paul Chryst had the Badgers scoring in less than sixty seconds, but it appears new OC Matt Canada and the Badgers will return to a more traditional and conservative approach in 2012.

Wisconsin Badgers clip the Commodores for a trip to the Sweet 16 (Rapid Reaction)

Thanks to some pesky defense against the #5 Vanderbilt Commodores, the #4 Wisconsin Badgers are Boston bound for their second trip to the Sweet 16 in the last two years.

Threes were flying from everywhere with the Badgers shooting a total of 33 shots from beyond the arc. They connected on ten of them, including three a-piece for guards Ben Brust and Jordan Taylor in a 60-57 win.

Next up for the Badgers is a date with the #1 Syracuse Orange-Men who played excellent zone defense in their defeat of Kansas State in the round of 32. [Read more…]

Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers stay perfect in Senior Day Games (Rapid Reaction)

With a 70-56 win over the Fighting Illini, the Wisconsin Badgers’ Head Coach Bo Ryan is now 11-0 in Senior Day games at the Kohl Center.

Seniors Jordan Taylor and Rob Wilson were magnificent with 24 combined points to help the Badgers (23-8, 12-6) end the regular season on a three-game winning streak.

After losing eight of their last nine games, Illinois (17-14, 6-12) would have to pull out a miracle and win the Big Ten Tournament if they want to make the NCAA Tournament.

Wisconsin Badgers pick up signature win at Ohio State (Rapid Reaction)

After 29 games, the Wisconsin Badgers have finally picked up that signature win they were looking for.

Better late than never as Jordan Taylor and Jared Berggren’s combined 37 points helped the Badgers upset the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 63-60.

With the loss, the Michigan State Spartans clinch at least a share of the Big Ten Title and Ohio State’s (23-6, 11-5) chances at a number one seed are now dashed. Meanwhile, the Badgers (21-8, 10-6) have most certainly enhanced their resume for the big dance.

“We’ve played two very good teams. Today, we needed to have the ability to sustain what we had going, which we didn’t do. We didn’t get the execution or the defensive stops that we needed,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of the loss.

#8 Michigan State easily handle the #17 Wisconsin Badgers (Rapid Reaction)

The game started out with the characteristic exchange of runs for the #8 Michigan State Spartans and #17 Wisconsin Badgers, but it wasn’t long before the Spartans jumped out to a commanding lead and an impressive 69-55 win.

The Spartans (21-5, 10-3) excelled in every facet of the game and surely looked like they could be primed for another Final Four run under Tom Izzo.

Meanwhile, the Badgers (19-7, 8-5) appear to lack a realistic identity on the offensive end and were surprisingly exposed defensively at the Breslin Center.

Ohio State proves to be too strong for Wisconsin with 58-52 win (Rapid Reaction)

The #3 Ohio State Buckeyes keep control of their first-place standing in the Big Ten with a 58-52 win over the #20 Wisconsin Badgers. Preseason All-American Jared Sullinger was particularly strong with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the Buckeyes first win at the Kohl Center since 2000.

Wisconsin has become the poster-child for being outplayed, yet having the ability to somehow still be in the game. Today’s game was a perfect example while being out-rebounded (30-25), out-shot (43.1% to 40.0%) and out-hustled, but were still within a single point in the last couple of minutes. [Read more…]

Cold Day at the Kohl Center: Iowa Hawkeyes Knock Off #11 Wisconsin

No, this headline is not a misprint, the #11 Wisconsin Badgers have indeed dropped their conference home-opener to the Iowa Hawkeyes by the score of 72-65.

Iowa (9-6, 1-1) took full advantage of a horrendous-shooting performance from the Badgers (24-for-69) and a lackluster showing on the defensive end despite Wisconsin (12-3, 1-1) being one of the best in the nation on that side of the ball.

Freshman Hawkeye Aaron White was the surprising star of the day with a game-high 18 points off the bench. [Read more…]

The play-in game for the Big Ten Championship was never really that close as the #16 Wisconsin Badgers routed #19 Penn State, 45-7, in front of a packed house at Camp Randall on Senior Night. The Badgers (10-2, 6-2) will now represent the Leaders Division against a surging Michigan State team who has won eight of their last nine.

QB Russell Wilson and RB Montee Ball proved to both be worthy of the all-mighty Heisman as both players either tied or broke NCAA records on Saturday afternoon.

Following the game, UW’s Head Coach Bret Bielema said “I think we can play with anyone in the country, regardless of conference or ranking.”
