The Sports Bank “My Boy” Team

As the collegiate basketball season comes to a conclusion this evening, there is still hardware to be handed out that isn’t related to the National Championship. There’s the All-Americans, the Cousy Award, the Wooden Award and plenty of others, however here at The Sports Bank we like to honor players in a different manner.

Ohio State Cruises Past UT-San Antonio 75-46: NCAA 2nd Round Rapid Reaction

William Buford

Games can be unpredictable this time of year, after all this is why it’s called “March Madness.” The one exception has been the 1-16 matchup. As a matter of fact, the one seeds were a perfect 104-0 heading into the 2011 NCAA tournament. After Pittsburgh and Duke won by 23 and 32, respectively, Ohio State continued the streak by beating No. 16 seed UT-San Antonio 75-46.

College Hoops 101 (3/16/11)

uconn big east champs

There is doing work and then there is what I did during Conference Tournament week.  I was to watching college basketball what Bob Knight is to pump fakes; obsessed.  I did not reach my goal of watching all 15 Big East Tournament games but I did set a single week record for games watched. Plus, my final bracketology also held its own against Joe Lunardi’s which I consider a great success.  Now, let the madness begin!

If you are unfamiliar with College Hoops 101, it is a weekly feature here at The Sports Bank that breaks down everything you need to know going on in the world of college basketball.  I will look back at the conference tourneys and break down what to expect in the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

TSB’s FINAL Bracketology: Projecting the NCAA Tournament Brackets

final four

I am a huge college basketball nerd.  I know it and if you are a frequent visitor to the Sports Bank, you know it as well.  So much in fact, that I create my own bracketology which is seventy times nerdier than making a NBA mock draft.

In my inaugural year of entering this hallowed ground of geeks, my bracketology more than held its own ESPN’s “expert” bracketologist Joe Lunardi; a feat that I consider to be a huge accomplishment.

This year, there is more to take into account with the NCAA expanding the field to 68 teams.  That means there will now be four play-in games held in Dayton.  Two of those games will feature the final four at-large bids battling to be in the Field of 64.  Same will go for the last four automatic qualifiers.  Be sure to check back every week for updates on my Field of 68.

Illini Derail Hoosiers, Continue to Enhance NCAA Profile

bruce weber

Truthfully, if I again hear the words “enhance NCAA profile” or “NCAA profile needs enhancing” like there’s some sort of a erectile dysfunction drug to fix it, I’ll probably punch all the Viagra in the world. It’s getting out of hand people. Seriously.

But we’ve had to examine the profile of the Illinois Fighting Illini a lot these past couple of seasons. There’s been a lot (or, not a lot, if you prefer to look at it that way) to examine. It won’t be any different after their 72-48 win in their regular season finale against Indiana.

Without getting into major peripherals, the Illini are 19-12 overall, and 9-9 in the Big Ten. Prior to Saturday’s win, their KenPom ranking was 19th.

This season is no different, although it seems Illini fans everywhere now are talking about the Illini being “in” the dance and that all the work is done.

After dealing with this just one short season ago…I caution all Illini fans to tread carefully. [Read more…]
