Entering the holidays, Liverpool FC was looking really good, sitting in second place and bonafide title contenders. Now the Reds have been in a tailspin since the festive period, and the fixture congestion within it, ensued. Liverpool fell to relegation fodder Swansea City over the weekend, and something needs to be done to stop the bleeding.
If they’re looking to beef up the back line, then perhaps Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, 25, could be a part of the solution.
That’s what LFC legend Steven Gerrard believes.
“Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”
Very true- Anfield has certainly become St. Mary’s North since 2014, as the Reds keep utilizing the south coast club as a quasi-farm team. Still, it’s a very interesting comment, especially so when you consider that it comes from a man who just a couple days ago announced that he had re-joined Liverpool as a Youth Coach.
Virgil van Dijk left Celtic in 2015 for Southampton, who reportedly beat off interest from Sunderland, Arsenal, Everton and West Brom. The Gunners were consistently linked with Van Dijk for much of 2014.
