Former Premier League footballer John Carew will make the change from sportsman to movie star as he is set to appear in a Norwegian gangster film.
Carew can be booked through the London celebrity talent agency MN2S. The former West Ham and Aston Villa striker will play hired gangster ‘Igor’ in a film directed by Irasj Asanti. Høvdinger portrays a convicted criminal on a quest to find out what happened to his hospitalised bother, leading him to the Albanian mafia and a very murky situation that relates to his brother’s debt.
This specific acting role is not Carew’s first; he previously starred in the 2013 Canadian horror film Dead of Winter. After retiring from professional football in 2013, it might have been expected that Carew would stick to commentating or managerial duties, but in addition to that he has turned his sights to acting. Carew spoke of his role saying “It’s a fun and interesting role. I would compare myself with Will Smith and ‘The Rock’ perhaps”.
Carew’s on screen character in the new film matches his perceived persona – standing at 6’4” Carew is every bit imposing. Having intimidated many opponents on the football pitch, he is now doing so in a fictitious role. He has expressed excitement about the role in an Interview with TalkSport, saying, “It’s a fun and interesting role.”
Carew is not the first footballer embarking on a film career. Vinnie Jones and Frank Leboeuf have previously done so.
Carew, who also played for Stoke City, is working to perfect his craft on screen, said, “I have been working on films for four years, I’ve been working on my acting for four years, alongside football and I had other opportunities coming in the film industry and TV.”
John Carew’s successful winning background puts him in good stead to grace film theatres. Hi international football career spans 13 years, beginning with local clubs in Norway. Internationally, he scored 24 goals for native his national team. Carew was spotted by Vålerenga in 1997, who would later win the Norwegian Football Cup that year. In 1998 they reached the finals of the European Championships.
In Carew’s earlier years he fast made an impression as a prolific goal scorer, scoring 14 times in 33 appearances. His career allowed him to play for some of the most talented European teams. His high profile €8.5 million transfer to Spanish club Valencia brought him the opportunity to win the La Liga title twice. Carew joined Aston Villa in 2007 and was the Villans’ top scorer for 2007–08.
Having now moved into commentating with sports television outlets such as BBC, ITV and TalkSport, Carew offers his insight on today’s footballing talent. Carew also took up opportunities with Norwegian television networks during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
