The all-time leading scorer in Purdue basketball history, Rick Mount, is a mysterious enigma. No one really knows why, specifically, he estranged himself from the program for so long. Perhaps we’ll get some answers tonight as Mount returns home; finally. Mount will be at Mackey when the #14 Boilers host Iowa in their Big Ten home opener.
It’s Rick Mount bobblehead day for Purdue basketball, as their legend and hero finally makes his homecoming out of the blue.
(UPDATE: Here are photos of Rick Mount coming home to Purdue, via SB Nation)
The game is at 6 eastern on BTN and the opponent will be a very tough Hawkeyes squad brimming with confidence after they just handed #1 Michigan State their first loss of the season.
It wasn’t just a loss, it was a total beat down, so this Purdue basketball team better be ready. Mount will be the main story line in this one, and our favorite place in the world for Purdue basketball coverage, Hammer and Rails has more insight on the history here.
His bitter feud with Purdue allegedly started when his son, Richie, did not get the playing time he wanted under Gene Keady in the late 80s. Since then, the relationship between him and his alma mater has been frosty, but when Purdue announced that tomorrow’s game with Iowa would be a night to honor him with a bobblehead they extended an invitation for him to come home.
Not many people expected him to accept, given the mysterious reasons as to why there was no relationship there for decades, but surprisingly, he is coming home.
This makes for a great night, win or lose.
Should make for some great copy Big Ten and Purdue basketball fans!
