There’s always going to be winners and losers at the NFL draft, and the same was this year too. After three days of round picking, it’s time to review who got what and whether the teams picked what they really needed. Surely the winners are those teams that went for players that fit best in their schemes, but also players whose character is best for the locker room atmosphere. Most of all, these players are required to show their best from Day 1 if they are going to justify the hype behind them, which makes drafting a risky business.
Some of the highlights this year were Amari Cooper, Todd Gurley and Jameis Winston, the top wide receiver, running back and quarterback overall. Jameis was the first pick overall, and the Buccaneers got a top grade quarterback in him. But, let’s look at which teams landed their ideal player, or which player landed his ideal team, however you want to put it.
Dante Fowler Jr. has surely found his home. He was picked 3rd by the Jaguars, and considering that their defense starts with a dynamic pass rusher, this player has a great potential in that area. On top of that, he will be playing in a city where the fans will be more patient with his development compared to the fans of any other team.
The 12th pick, Danny Shelton, picked by the Browns, is a perfect player for the Browns’ terrible defense. They had the worst yards allowed per game average last season, but Shelton is an elite run-stuffer and will fit perfectly in the Browns’ defense tactic. He has a superior strength and surprising quickness which will allow him to control the A-gaps.
Another winner in the draft are the Kansas City Chiefs and their pick Marcus Peters, who has a reputation for an aggressive style that will fit perfectly in the Chief’s defense. He is also known as a player with volatile personality, but it seems he couldn’t have found a better home. What’s even better is that he won’t be under much media scrutiny as he would in a bigger team. On top of that, he will be coached there by Emmitt Thomas, a Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back.
Other teams that the experts think have found their perfect players are the Steelers and their pick Bud Dupree, Indianapolis Colts and Phillip Dorsett, and Chicago Bears and Eddie Goldman etc. At 270 pounds, Dupree is a far better fit than a smaller pass rusher such as Shane Ray or Vic Beasley, plus Jarvis Jones simply hasn’t worked out for the Steelers, so Dupree could be exactly the right answer.
As for the losers, we will see who made the wrong decision in the coming season.
