The following is a live blog style commentary on the night’s best and worst Super Bowl Ads, and with the help of the Media Curves.com ad rating widget (look to the right hand sidebar of this homepage to see it in action), we include numerical rankings of how the ads registered with the general audience. You can also go there to watch each of these ads and rate them yourself. Note: the numbers and rankings listed reflect the readings recorded at the time this blog was written. These numbers are obviously very likely to change. Time zone of our entries is Central.
(5:43) Regarding the “controversial” Tim Tebow ad- I found it VERY MILD and innocuous considering
1.) All the hullabaloo about it 2.) The overall aims and goals of the radical right organization that funded it.
It ended up ranking just 90th/110 on the Media Curves.com chart with a ranking of 40.
More importantly, who actually gets their sociopolitical views and core values from a Super Bowl spot? Certainly no one with an IQ over 75! At least I hope so. Whether you agree or disagree with Tebow’s message, it’s not like a washed up collegiate quarterback can have any true influence on your life; unless you let him –PMB
The Tebow ad aired and I didn’t throw up until the last 4 seconds… I’m really proud of that fact. –PC
(5:54) Commercials have been disappointing thus far, but the two Doritos commercials have been the best. The one with the kid slapping the guy (4th highest ranked on Media Cruves) was better than the one with the shock collar (which took 9th). –PC
I agree the “House Rules” Doritos ad was my favorite of the night. I wanted to say that the nacho chip ads haven’t been the same since the ridonkulously attractive Ali Landry stopped campaigning for them, but this was a solid comeback showing on their part –PMB
(5:56) I also enjoyed seeing Dr. Chang from Lost in that Bud Light commercial, but the commercial sucked. –PC
Agreed. Bud Light commercials were collectively very overrated and disappointing on the night –PMB
(6:02) Simpson’s Coca-Cola commercial (MC ranking of 21st) immediately vaults to the top –PC
It reminds me of the old days when we were inundated with Bart Simpsons Butterfinger ads –PMB
(6:05) I’m not sure if it’s possible for a series of commercials to “Jump the Shark” but Go-Daddy is trying really hard to find out.
I’ll see your comment and raise it one further, I’m sick of Danica now, I think she herself has jumped the shark –PMB
(6:05) Doritos re-takes the lead with their funeral commercial. First time I laughed out loud tonight. –PC
(6:10) I watch a ton of TV and none of it’s on CBS, yet somehow they keep claiming to be #1 in everything. Who’s watching all that stuff?
Hahahaha, no one under age 60 watches this network, unless it’s during March Madness. If you look at the Media Curves rankings, all the CBS show promos fill up the bottom portion of the list –PMB
(6:22) Did CBS just put two commercials featuring people in their underwear back to back? I’m wearing pants and there’s no commercial that is going to change that. (PC)
(7:19) If you look to the right, you’ll see that the Snickers “Betty White” ad is being rated the best so far according to MediaCurve.com and the Doritos “Dying Wish” ad is rated 13th… people baffle me. –PC
More people vote for American Idol than they do the President so I echo that sentiment–PMB
(7:20) When the High Life guy started the commercial “We at High Life gave our commercial away…” He wasn’t joking. What a waste of a usually good ad. –PC
I thought it was a little better than you did because “Tim’s Card shop” is located in Chicago right across the street from where I play softball. Plus that’s a really cool opportunity for small business owners –PMB
(7:30) Volkswagen takes the lead with the best ad of the night… tough to top that one. –PC
(7:41) Do people actually use the KGB service? Why would they pay for a service that ChaCha offers for free? –PC
Yeah, I never understood the point of those ads, at least there’s attractive women in them. Sometimes –PMB
(7:44) E-Trade follows up the last two year’s awesome Super Bowl ads with a PATHETIC SHOWING… Both my wife and I gave each other Jim Caldwell faces after it aired. –PC
E-Trade ranked 12th and 28th…both WAY TOO HIGH in my opinion –PMB
(8:32) “I’d like to hear you read some words” Best line of Super Bowl XLIV commercials. Bud Light makes up for a pretty weak showing with that line. –PC
(8:55) –The best commercial in my opinion was the Volkswagen ad with Stevie Wonder calling out the color and slugging Tracy Morgan and the best line of the night belonged to the final Bud Light commercial. (ranked 19th with a score of 60) –PC
