Remember when Drew Bledsoe got “Bledsoed” by Tom Brady back in 2001? Then he got Bledsoed again several years later by Tony Romo? You might remember when Romo himself then got Bledsoed, or now we can say Romoed; because it just happened.
While injured, Romo lost his starting gig to Dak Prescott, who’s an early front-runner for the NFL MVP award. Prescott has led the Dallas Cowboys to a 9-1 record, placing them a peg or two above a National Football League that is mostly overflowing with mediocrity.
It’s Prescott’s team now, which means Romo needs to move on in 2017.
Credit Romo though for accepting the situation with aplomb and grace. He has certainly been a professional about this and taken it like a champ.
“What Tony Romo did was just fantastic. My hat is off to him. I think everybody in America, whether you’re a Cowboys fan or not, says, ‘You know what, that guy’s a class act.’ He shows that he’s a leader, that he’s a great teammate and he’s supporting Dak. He’s there for him, they’ve got each other’s back—I love the situation,” said Steve Mariucci on Tony Romo serving as Dallas Cowboys’ backup quarterback.
“Jerry Jones has always had a tremendous amount of respect for Tony Romo. I suspect he would do the right thing. It’s common interest. I think the New York Jets would be a tremendous landing spot. We know that Dallas kicked the tires on trying to trade for Sheldon Richardson,” said Bart Scott.
“The Jets aren’t going to sign Sheldon Richardson long term. It’s a natural trade there. They can make it work.”
“If he’s a competitor he will not be with Dallas next year. That is for sure. He will force a trade. And I would hope that Jerry Jones does him right and sends him to a good football team,” said Boomer Esiason.
Tony Gonzalez weighed in: “The Denver Broncos would be the ideal place, the most logical place. But I’m going to think outside the box here. I’m going to go with Jacksonville Jaguars. That would be a great spot. They have two great receivers. They have good running backs. They have tight ends. They have a young defense. Josh McDaniels comes down from New England and they have the dream scenario. To the playoffs – Jacksonville.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport On potential teams for Tony Romo:
“I’m told it’ll be likely a trade rather than a release of Tony Romo going into this offseason. Romo would be in complete control of this situation and they wouldn’t trade him, for instance, to the Cleveland Browns, and Romo would be able to negotiate a contract before trade or release and touch base with a team so he would know where he’s going.
I’m told one place he already has eyes on is the Denver Broncos, who already did a similar thing with Peyton Manning a couple years back, and we remember how that one turned out.
The Bears would also be a possibility, perhaps the Arizona Cardinals if Carson Palmer does not continue there. And Jason Witten brought it up this week, the possibility of retirement, he said it is not in Romo’s mind. I’m told it actually is a possibility and at that point Romo could continue on with the Cowboys, working with the Cowboys in some form or fashion.”
Don’t forget the San Francisco 49ers, they need to solve their QB issues as well. It would appear that there are just three signal callers (DeShone Kizer, Deshaun Watson and Mitch Trubisky) who grade out as first round caliber, and will likely be there come April’s NFL Draft. Thus you’re going to have at least four or five teams in dire need of a signal caller.
It’s rare that QB of this quality hits the open market, and thus advantage to Tony Romo and his agent. Yes, his age is a strike against him but 2017 will indeed be a seller’s market for him.
