Michael Schlact had planned to attend the University of South Carolina to study journalism before the Texas Rangers made him a high draft choice.
Schlact is among the many major league hopefuls who will launch the 2012 Independent season when the Atlantic League opens its gates in two weeks (April 26). He will be part of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (Waldorf, MD) starting staff to follow up on his 6-4, 4.61 season last year.
The media-savvy Schlact started writing a blog two winters ago “to share the experiences” after shoulder surgery and “I had a lot of people who were interested in the ups and downs of playing baseball.” And, he has built up to where he now has 3,000 Facebook followers and another 12,400, he said, on Twitter (@Michael_Schlact).
“I enjoy expressing myself through words”, he added, chuckling that teammates know all too well how much he can talk. Social media “is a powerful platform”.
He has some “powerful” friends among those with whom he keeps in touch, including former teammates Matt Harrison, now a Rangers starting pitcher, and C. J. Wilson, who combined for 30 regular season wins with the two-time American League champions last season. Wilson has since signed a rich free agent pact with the Los Angeles Angels. Twitter has also been responsible for linking Schlact with Arizona pitchers Daniel Hudson and Barry Enright along with Pittsburgh closer Joel Hanrahan.
