Professor Selig? Bud’s Career After Commish

Bud Selig didn’t leave Milwaukee. Not before reinforcing ties to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin–Madison. First, he made an announcement of several endowments that will benefit students.  Then he discussed the prospect of returning to school, and teaching history there!

Bud and his wife Suzanne Selig made a significant endowment to the UW history department, funding what will be named the Allan H. Selig Chair in History at the UW-Madison. The faculty position will focus on the relationship between sports and society from 1900 to the present.

“I hope more research can be done on things like that because so much has happened (in baseball) since the early 1900s,” Selig said. “Anything we can do to help educate others on what goes on in baseball.”

When asked if he will consider a more involved relationship with his alma mater after he retires as Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Selig gave a confident ‘yes.’

“When I left Madison a long time ago, I thought I was returning to be a history professor,” said Selig. “That’s what I wanted to be. And I’ve often wondered [about it] with this interesting journey that I’ve been on.”

Selig says he is beginning to collect volumes of papers and turn them over to the history department at UW-Madison and the Wisconsin Historical Society. Perhaps, he’s still got the itch to be called Professor Selig after all.

“I was looking at my things today,” said Selig.  “The boxes are arriving and it’s fun to look back at things from 1965 and 1970. I plan to talk about a partnership, and it’s the beginning of a great relationship.”

Two more scholarships helping UW-Madison students were also announced. The Selig’s, along with three MLB owners — Milwaukee Brewers chair and principal owner Mark Attanasio, Lew Wolff of the Oakland A’s and Tom Werner of the Boston Red Sox — are endowing the Suzanne and Allan “Bud” Selig Great People Scholarship.  MLB Hall of Famer Hank Aaron and his wife, Billye, are endowing the “4 for 4” Scholarship in Selig’s honor. The scholarship is part of Aaron’s Chasing the Dream Foundation’s efforts.
