Poker Tips for Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez has been alleged to have engaged in high stakes poker games with other celebrities in the recent past. These supposed illegal contests have hurt his image during a time when he hasn’t been producing on the field due to injury. I am an aficionado of poker and have some suggestions for the highest paid baseball player.

He shouldn’t deposit money into any offshore poker accounts. It would probably even be safer for him to put his money into a stock of a Fortune 500 company right now. There has been some argument over the legality of these gaming sites and money is still tied up in at least one major one.

He should watch poker on Fox Sports. The World Poker Tour has high quality analysis provided by commentator Mike Sexton. If A Rod implemented even a small portion of Sexton’s advice, then he would likely walk away with most of the chips at almost any table.

This would take an act of God, but a personality transplant is in order. Teammate Derek Jeter’s popularity is at an all time high after attaining his three thousandth hit last month. The captain is universally seen as a leader. A Rod is on the other end of the spectrum. Reading others in a live game is a necessity for success and he obviously is not adept at this. If he were, he wouldn’t pull the shenanigans that he has over his career. Remember the sign stealing incident?

Starting out at low stakes game is the smart move. Money probably isn’t an object for Rodriguez, but flushing it down the toilet is never wise. Until he becomes a more advanced player, the lower pots would be less stressful. It’s never safe to carry around suitcases of cash anyway, no matter where you are.

Rodriguez went straight into professional baseball from high school. I am not sure how much he enjoys reading, but there is a plethora of books on the market that share strategies and recipes for success in various scenarios. Actual tutorials from the pros could also be an option since Rodriguez is a celebrity and would have access to them. Sifting through the different philosophies would allow him to pick and choose what he deems as valuable advice.

A Rod should only play live games. This would lessen the chance that the hobby would become an addiction. The inconvenience of having to leave the house and play at a casino table is a more desirable situation. The variety of players would also give him experience against different personalities and styles.

Finally, A Rod should play at Foxwoods. The resort and casino is already an advertiser on the Yankee radio network. A Rod would have tremendous credibility as a spokesman for the resort if he was a regular in the poker room. If he plays enough, he could even earn some comp show tickets to Jerry Seinfeld or buffet vouchers. Imagine sitting next to A Rod while he is dining on the all-you-can-eat crab legs!
