Not like we need to do anything to bring more awareness to the New York Yankees (ESPN and pop culture at large has done plenty of that already) but this story is pretty cool. This Yankees fan is 111 years old; that’s even longer than the Chicago Cubs World Series drought.
Bernando LaPallo has been alive longer than the NY Yankees have even been the Yankees.
From Big League Stew:
Technically, yes, the franchise did exist on August 17, 1901 — the day LaPollo was born — but they were then known as the New York Highlanders. It wasn’t until three years later that the Yankees name would come along. Also, for a little more perspective, LaPallo is the same age as the American League itself. That’s pretty mind-blowing when you think about it, and definitely cool, but not nearly as cool as watching LaPallo walk onto the Yankee Stadium grass as he did prior to Saturday evening’s game against the rival Boston Red Sox. LaPallo was given full access to the field and was spotted mingling with players such as Derek Jeter.
Yes, LaPallo has been to three homes of the MLB flagship franchise: the new billion dollar behemoth, the House that Ruth built and whatever building the Bronx Bombers called home before Yankee Stadium.
