Manchester United are now in first place in the Barclay’s Premier League. This is the first time it’s happened during the short tenure of United manager Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman says it is a “very nice feeling” and that he is quite happy after today’s result. The Red Devils beat Sunderland 3-0 on the strength of goals from Wayne Rooney (footage of that scoring strike here at this link), Memphis Depay and Juan Mata (view those goals at this link.
Louis Van Gaal Post-Match Press Conference – Manchester United 3, Sunderland 0. YouTube below:
Van Gaal on Memphis Depay scoring in the extra time added just before halftime and how it changed the complexion of a then 0-0 match:
“I change my approach at halftime because of that. We were at that time 1-0 ahead and all of a sudden it’s a different game.”
Van Gaal responded to a question about what the approach will be like moving forward with United leading the league now:
“The next one is a very difficult away game against Arsenal, one of the better teams in the Premier League I think. So it is not so easy to keep that, but I think it is better that you are there than like last year, when you are 13th position in the league table.”
