Louis Van Gaal: “Till the end we were not so good anymore, we were afraid to play the ball.”
That’s what the Manchester United Manager said near the beginning of his post game interview. His side drew 0-0, and the result was every bit as boring as it sounds. The second half was so dull that United’s own home fans booed them loudly and boisterously.
Here are the Group B Standings, along with percentage chance of each side advancing, according to ESPN FC Soccer Power Index.
Wolfsburg 9 pts, 89% chance of advancing, according to SPI
Man United 8, 53%
PSV Eindhoven 7, 58%
CSKA Moscow 4, eliminated
Here’s the You Tube video of Van Gaal giving his post match interview embedded below:
Van Gaal’s side would have clinched a berth in the knockout round today had they won, but now they’ll have a much tougher task ahead in order to get through. Their next result has to be superior to PSV Eindhoven’s result. If the Dutch side tie, United must win. If PSV loses, then United must at least draw.
It’s a tall order because United have their toughest match (at Wolfsburg) remaining as their last group stages tie. While PSV on the other hand, has the easiest final remaining match- at home versus CSKA Moscow.
The Russian side is the only club in the group who are already eliminated.
