Manchester United could see David De Gea leave. Or he might stay. Yes, here we go again with a story that’s been more rehashed than the “Police Academy” and “Fast & Furious” film franchies combined. Maybe there’s some fire to this smoke, maybe this is just what news outlets do to fill space and make their page views quotas on slow news day.
It certainly doesn’t help that this January transfer window has been very dull and extremely uneventful. However, this edition of De Gea “Will he or won’t he?” has an international theme. It’s “Spanish style.”
David De Gea’s Manchester United future looks set to hinge on whether he starts for Spain at Euro 2016, with sources telling ESPN FC that the Old Trafford club are confident of keeping the goalkeeper if he gets Vicente del Bosque’s No. 1 spot.
De Gea’s supreme United form has led to calls in Spain for him to start, but Del Bosque has remained loyal to Porto’s Iker Casillas.
We really thought that the news of Real Madrid getting hit with a transfer ban a few days ago would kill off this story; at least for the time being. If you’re still confused as to how country status determines club destination (you’re not alone), well the logic supposedly goes as follows. De Gea would want to move to the Bernabeu for several reasons. It’s his hometown.
His smoking hot girlfriend, Spanish pop star Edurne, lives there and prefers Madrid to Manchester, a place she said “looks like the back of a fridge.”
Most importantly, De Gea feels a move to Spain’s most high profile club is necessary to finally get the status and visibility required to ultimately usurp Iker Casillas as the Spanish #1.
Again this could be much ado about nothing. On the other hand, there’s a reason United supporters were concerned after the summer transfer deadline day move failed. Everybody knows how extremely corrupt the game of international football is and you could easily see Spain somehow, someway fixing that situation so De Gea could return to his hometown for the nation’s flagship football franchise.
