While few footballers are known by a brand reference, there are exceptions to this rule. The most notable is Cristiano Ronaldo, who is commonly referred to as CR7 and often uses this moniker to brand boots, equipment and other items with which he is associated. Following in the footsteps of David Beckham (who he ironically hired the number seven shirt from at Old Trafford), he is now arguably the most marketable footballer in the world and also one of the highest earning.
Despite this and his recent receipt of the Ballon d’Or World Player of the Year award, Ronaldo appears to occasionally cut a disconsolate figure in Madrid. While some reports have suggested that this dissatisfaction is due to contractual demands not being met, others have suggested that Ronaldo feels unappreciated in Madrid and yearns for a return to his beloved Manchester United. Those in the know suggest that this is nonsense, and there are numerous factors that seem to support the idea that Ronaldo will see out his career in Madrid.
Firstly, Ronaldo enjoys the ideal lifestyle in Madrid, both in terms of climate and his close proximity to his hometown of Lisbon in Portugal. This is a key factor, as one of the reasons behind his original move in 2009 is that he wanted to be close to his mother. A quick glance at his property in Madrid also suggests that Ronaldo is not going anywhere, as the Portuguese recently invested a staggering $7.2 million in a luxurious mansion. Ronaldo is also settled in the Spanish capital with his son of the same name, and he would be loath to uproot him for the foreseeable future.
These factors seem to suggest that Ronaldo is unlikely to move, especially when you also consider his status in Madrid and the fact that his current contract makes him one of the world’s best paid players. This will not prevent new rumours from formulating, however, with both Manchester clubs supposedly interested in negotiating a deal.
So what else could be causing Ronaldo’s apparent dismay? It may be something as simple as a temporary dissatisfaction with his own game, as the player is renowned for his exceptionally high standards and drive for self-improvement. This is the most likely reason for his sporadic moodiness, especially during periods where his club are struggling to achieve success.
