In theory, and we use the term “theory” very loosely, the Real Madrid transfer ban could be a double edged sword for Manchester United. Real Madrid, as well as their fellow denizens of the Spanish capital Atletico Madrid, were slapped with a two transfer window ban today, covering the summer 2016 and January 2017 transfer windows.
FIFA, perhaps the least respected and least credible organization on Earth, is still the sport’s governing body, and they deemed the two Madrid clubs guilty of rules infractions in regard to recruiting young players.
Atletico will appeal the ruling, which does not cover this current ongoing window, and reports in Spain indicate that Los Blancos will as well. Should the appeals be denied, then Real Madrid would have just two weeks and change to acquire any new players until summer 2017. They could still sell players to other teams, but would be unable to buy new replacements, That means they wouldn’t be likely to part ways with their Galacticos.
If you actually believe that United really have a chance of acquiring Gareth Bale, then this is a setback for the Red Devils. I guess I’m obligated to bring up the idea of a potential Cristiano Ronaldo move too; even though I think that has a <1% chance of actually happening.
On the flip side of this situation, the Real Madrid transfer ban means that Old Trafford were handed a major boost today regarding the long term future of David de Gea. Yes, he signed a four year contract extension in September on the heels of a transfer saga that dominated the summer window news cycle.
That soap opera ended in a £29 million bid collapsing on deadline day due to let’s say “logistical failures.” It is still not public whether De Gea’s current deal contains a release clause or not. If it does, then you know there’s always a chance that Real will try to activate it.
Of course, there will always be speculation, rumors and gossip relating to it being published incessantly as well.
